Grandview 7. Kearney 42

Ruskin got after Kearney pretty good in at least the first quarter of that game. They have a good former KS HC now I expect them to only get better moving forward. Smithville, in all fairness, is about rotating players in and out to keep the starters fresh for the playoffs. HERE, though, is a huge key: Kearney has been no match for them in said playoffs since they joined the Sub Blue in 2018. Couple that with the very deceptive Week 3 result and the formula is there for the KDogs to turn the tables. Again we will visit this in full IF/when the two hook up again November 10.

Not sure if games played years ago are relevant, only insofar as the current players have been involved. AND the Junior and Senior classes of K are accustomed to beating Smithville teams in 8th and 9th, JV and last year and of course in game 1 of varsity last year. Turnovers have been key in the two most recent losses. And having 5 turnovers in both of the last two losses is just too much to be in the game. (and at least half of those were forced) It is hard to tell how good anyone is when you are playing teams you beat 35-0 at halftime. We will find out in November.

I'd love to see Ruskin be able to turn the corner. If you can just have one decent year and the right coach it might be enough to keep talent from transferring after 8th grade. Minnick did that with Raytown and it seems Harris is changing Ray South for the better?
Just an observation, Grandview, Center, Ruskin, Raytown and Ray South are so close to each other. Hard to believe 4 school districts are represented in that small area.

I look at today's Smithville much the same as Webb City as far as coaching and prep go. Those kids are bouncing off that turf ready to go big time every game I've seen. This is why I point out the slow Kearney D starts in those blowouts you mention.

I am, however, taking note of Smithville's most recent game as I follow KS 5A HSFB pretty closely and am far from impressed with Pittsburg who barely beat Independence who is not good at all. One key difference I see this year so far is Smithville does not seem as dominant defensively. Kearney ran very well against them even back in the QB3 altered Week 3 game. Again this is 20+ days away but closing fast. Years ago are relevant because Smithville has built a solid program who expects to advance to the State Semis at an absolute minimum (have done so 4 of the past 5 years) and will every year this varsity staff remains intact. I pay little or no attention to how anyone plays in earlier grades even JV unless they are like Kearney back around 2000-01 (steamroller).

South KC continues to have a high population density. Yes I agree Ray South is also improving pretty fast. Had some real nice athletes and seemed much more disciplined overall than recent past years.

Way back in 2010 I really thought Ruskin absorbing Hickman Mills, who had several good teams, would benefit but the opposite happened. My whole crew here at work are Cougars grads who grew up together they all abhor Ruskin. That being said they did, in my opinion, hire a good HC they definitely were better disciplined and athletic than I frankly expected last month.

I was actually wondering about the Smithville Pittsburg score. I thought Smithville would win by a much bigger margin.

I pay not much attention to how Kearney did vs. Smithville in 2017 with Coach Gray.

Grandview had 3.78 yards per carry Friday. The K D had 10 TFLs

Pittsburg had good numbers back but have really struggled overall this year. Could be a mirage but Smithville definitely not rolling the overmatched games like they did the past 2 years in particular.

The Oracle of Calpreps has Spoken:

Smithville (MO) at Grandview (MO), 7:00pm
[projection and percent chances to win: Smithville (MO) 28 (57%) Grandview (MO) 26 (43%)]

I know that Kearney had injuries but not sure how you go from beating Kearney to losing to Grandview.

You mean 2018 (what I call the crossroads year between these two) but I get your point.

They same way you go from beating Kearney Lite to giving up 160 yards to Ruskin in the first half, 205 yards rushing to Raytown South who put up 7.3 ypc.
Wild guess, Smithville 28 Grandview 21.
Depends if you have refs calling holding tight, then Grandview might get less. They will be holding on every O run.

I don't think it will be quite that tight as I would assume, with a bye the next week, Ambroson et al will want Smithville to essentially play this one at full strength.

I guess 21-12 with a minute left with Raytown South, they were just subbing people in for that one? bahahaaha

Well, it was. Grandview outgained Sv by 191 yards (470 to 279) on offense. Bad decision to go for it deep in own territory and then great stand by SV on the 1 in 2Q saved them the loss.
