Girls rankings

Too early to quibble too much about those rankings. Republic lost a lot and the players who are replacing them are relatively unproven so that was a surprise. Nixa returns just about everyone and expectations for them should be pretty high.

Class 2, 3, 5 and 6 are loaded in SWMO. Class 1 and 4 are not so much. Ava is the real deal, from the start of last season to now I don't think any other team has improved as much and they are well coached.

Ava is good, but they are not top 5 in the state right now. They are still without their best player and the girl who makes everything go for them. They maybe top 5 by the end of the year.

There are some teams that probably shouldn't be on there, but Ava definitely isn't one of them. There are some solid teams in their conference, but they should win it easily. They should also win that district without too much trouble, maybe Logan Rogers, unless there are some teams that are better than I'm guessing.

They are still plenty good without her. They have the depth and talent to overcome her absence.

That said, they will be tested this week at the Fair Grove tournament. They play Clever, and if they win that then most likely Lebanon. If they get past them, then West Plains likely looms. WP looks scary good in the early going.

Hollister was only down 5 to Ava in the first game last week in the third quarter, but then ran out of gas in the fourth. Much credit to Ava's man to man defense and especially to Evans and Mendel, both great players on both ends.

Don't be surprised to see Walnut Grove make a return to the Class 1 rankings before long. Despite losing 90% of their scoring, they are playing well early.

Eldo and skyline should play for the Warsaw tournament championship end of this week that will be nice early season game.

Ava is going to win the SCA easily? Willow won the conference last year and returns several starters. Liberty has some talent coming back off injury and in their freshman group. Salem cannot be overlooked. Houston is on the upswing. Can never count out Thayer. Ava may win the conference and district, but it will in no way be easy.

And I didnt say they shouldn't be on there, just that they shouldn't be top 5 just yet.

Don't get me wrong, that conference has some very good programs and teams at the moment. I saw Ava late last year and just think very highly of them. Willow Springs did win the conference last year, but graduated a very good player. Liberty will definitely be better with their injured player returning. Salem always puts a strong team on the floor. Didn't you say they wouldn't be a threat because they don't play defense......just busting your chops. Houston seems to have some talented girls, at least based on their surprise volleyball run. Thayer has been a strong program, but have a new coach so I don't know what to make of them yet. It's usually one of the better conferences top to bottom and there will be several good to very good teams in there again this year. I just think Ava is elite. If they don't win it, that would be a major disappoint for them in my opinion.

I totally agree that it's a strong group of teams on a yearly basis though and that Ava will be much better when they get healthy. Maybe not top 5 at the moment, but then again, maybe they are. We'll just have to watch some games.

I've watched Ava's first two games and they look pretty dang good to me. Mendel is a load inside, Evans is a 5'10 guard who is very coordinated and quick for her size, can get to the rack, knock down the 3, or catch and score inside. The Gastineau girl that isn't hurt is very good also. They play a tough man to man D and if any of them get beat, the 6'2 Mendel is waiting for them inside.

Clever had a good game plan against them last night, they doubled Mendel when she caught the post pass and didn't give her much room to operate, and scored only 13 points, most on offensive rebounds, but Ava won by 14, a testament to how much talent they have. They also drew Mendel outside on defense a lot which opened up the lane for some drives by the Clever guards. But they play Lebanon next and it'll be interesting to see how they fare against the Lebanon press and all the pesky guards they have. Plus it's McCowan vs Mendel inside.

Fair enough. I am not down on Ava, they are really good, I just don't think they are good enough to win the conference easily. If their PG was healthy it would be a done deal.

I did say that about Salem ha, nice memory. I do not think they are good enough defensively to win the conference, but I do think they are good enough to knock off any team in the conference on a given night, especially at their place. They have some shooters that can get hot and then look out.

Lebanon is going to give Ava some problems. Lebanon has the size to deal with Mendel and they have aggressive guards that will be better than what Ava has right now. Now if Ava beats Lebanon I will concede that they win the SCA easily.
