Was told yesterday former Carl Junction head football coach H.B. Davis passed away.

At the time of his passing, he is the all-time wins leader for a head football coach in Carl Junction High School football history. He was head coach from 1980-1993, had 69 wins, 77 losses, four district championships and guided the Bulldogs to the state semifinals twice, 1983 the first in school history, and 1988.

Current head coach Doug Buckmaster is 67-35 in nine seasons at Carl Junction.

He was the coach and geography teacher when I was in school. CJ didn't care much about sports back then.

Interesting a losing record yet 4 district trophies and 2 state semis. Buck has a much better record but I believe zero trophies.

Don't anticipate seeing Bucky's smiling mug in the Hall of Carthage Heroes, either.

Buck's better teams were much better than Davis' best teams. Davis wasn't paired with a dynasty in districts.

Buck had some really solid teams but was dealt the same hand as Carthage in their early years of being "good" and what they are dealing with again now being in a geography that all but guarantees having to beat the umteen time champion just to win a district.

I'd like to see CJ put together some teams like what they had a few years ago and see where it could take them now.
