First weekend attendance in Springfield almost matched 2 week total in Columbia

You beat me to it!

"The first weekend of the MSHSAA state basketball tournament in Springfield nearly matched the entire two weeks’ worth of attendance in Columbia last year, according to the Springfield Sports Commission.

The commission’s executive director, Lance Kettering, says that the Class 1-3 tournament in Springfield drew an estimated 28,000 fans over its three days. He says that the total attendance for all five classes in Columbia last year was 32,000."

It seemed to me you was closer to the court than you were at the MIZZOU Arena , I thought the venue was great in Springfield I have no complaints

Sikeston brought a crowd. Grandview had decent size group too. Other than those games wasn’t too many people there.

I do like the arena. Seating was good like mentioned above. It didn’t seem like many people stayed for games other than their own.

I see the pros and cons on having it at Springfield compared to Mizzou.

I’m probably biased, but Springfield has more to offer when you’re not watching any games. I also like JQH better, I think it gets you “closer” to the game.

I don’t think alternating it every 2-3 years is a bad idea though.

The thing that I didn’t like about the JQH it didn’t show stats from the current game and scores from other games like Mizzou Arena does. I will admit you was kinda near the floor at the JQH.

They need to change the template on the main scoreboard at JQH or else get a new scoreboard. I know it's "only" ten years old, but ten years with LCD,LED stuff is like 30 years. More recent arena's have much better center court scoreboards.

This isn't a knock on Springfield bc Columbia was the same. I wish they would have the games in a smaller venue to have a better atmosphere. The arenas are too big for the crowds that these games draw.

I would like to know how the number was estimated. Why not just check with MSHSAA on the ticket sales. From the pics I seen from some of the class 4-5 games they might not have added that much more to the attendance. Plus a one year sample size wouldn't be near enough to draw an conclusions. Which teams attended plus proximity would make a big difference every year. I'm not saying one is better than the other just that you can not really draw any conclusion due to this number.

Columbia was the same? The attendance for the Final 4 this year will by far surpass Columbia.

Springfield is particularly well suited for the Class 1-3 weekend. Many of the teams are from this region so the crowds are great, and the fact that you can move from JQH to HSC in about 15 seconds is a huge benefit during that busy weekend with so many games going on. They were woefully underprepared on concessions for that weekend, but I hope that will not be repeated.

The parts of the Class 4-5 weekend that I saw were a little better attended than I expected. Heck, thanks to the large Sikeston contingent especially, the C4 boys 3rd place game with Sikeston and Jennings felt like a championship game. I know some people would like to do away with the 3rd place games, but that was a great game.

I think you must have misunderstood what I was saying. Columbia was the same in the fact that the arenas or so large that they do not have the intimate atmosphere. When the games have 3k or what ever small amount they do they don't have as good of a "feel" in an arena that seats 11k +

I would disagree....I have been a part of a Class 5 Boys final at Mizzou and the Class 1 Boys final at JQH.
While more fresh in my memory due to time I would say that JQH provides a more intimate feeling than Mizzou.

My point is that both places are poor choice bc they are too large. IMO a smaller venue would be a better atmosphere. My statement was never meant to imply either Mizzou or Springfield were superior to the other. I don't think either of them provide the atmosphere or many of the sectional or quarterfinal sites. A venue that seated a smaller amount their either Mizzou or Springfield yet still handled the crowd would make a more exciting atmosphere. That was my only point.

Drury I think might be too small for some of the games. The arena size you want is pretty scarce, the Show Me Center in Cape comes to mind.

I would be in favor of the Show Me Center so us folks in the SEMO area wouldn't have to drive 4 hours lol.

Interesting to see the fluctuation in attendance listed below. 15,000+ fewer 2017 vs 2016. Factors? Among others, 2016 had Justin Tatum and Michael Porter Jr in championship games, and Sikeston made it to Columbia.

SPRINGFIELD PLAYS HOST

For the first time since 1992 the state basketball championships were held outside of Columbia and the University of Missouri.

Springfield's JQH Arena played host for both championship weekends with Classes 1-3 playing March 8-10 and Classes 4-5 playing March 15-17.

The Missouri State High School Activities Association stated the paid attendance for both weekends combined at the state tournament was 35,000 and expects the total to go up a bit once it finishes its calculations.

That number is close to what it had the last five years at Mizzou. MSHSAA counted 32,709 last year, 48,310 in 2016, 39,822 in 2015, 37,423 in 2014 and 44,334 in 2013.

This was the first year in a five-year contract with JQH Arena and Hammons Student Center to host state basketball.

As I thought you can't really draw conclusions from one year's totals.

It boils down, simply, to the fact that teams that don’t bring large numbers with them made it to the Final 4. Sikeston is the only one that truly traveled…Liberty had a decent section, but not great. Kearney had a very decent following. I didn’t see the championship crowd, but the semis for Class 5 were incredibly small….Jennings, Grandview, and Ray South didn’t have large sections. Those small schools bring the whole town, which is the difference. If Logan-Rogersville, Kickapoo, Glendale, Ozark, Republic, Rolla, etc made it, you would’ve seen far greater numbers. Small towns like Sikeston, or schools like Borgia, bring more people than the city schools. You'll notice that the attendance in 2013 was higher as well. Also a year that Sikeston went.

The one exception to the rule was the Barstow vs. Father Tolton championship. Neither school had great followings, but state-wide interest to see the Porters against the defending champions brought out a ton of sideline fans.

You can forget about Glendale in that equation. We'll never get there and I'm not sure our student body would turn out. Student support WAY DOWN over the last 5-6 years. POO would've had a very nice crowd, ditto Ozark, Nixa, Republic, Rog, etc.

Kickapoo girls was at the final 4 this year and I didn’t see a huge crowd for them.

Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff is about 4,000 for basketball?
A little more than that with a packed house, but 4000 is a pretty good number and parking would be a problem with that many folks. The hotel situation has gotten better here but not nearly enough other stuff to do here to host a state tourney.
