Who said Springfield was not a basketball town.

You beat me to it!
"The first weekend of the MSHSAA state basketball tournament in Springfield nearly matched the entire two weeks’ worth of attendance in Columbia last year, according to the Springfield Sports Commission.
The commission’s executive director, Lance Kettering, says that the Class 1-3 tournament in Springfield drew an estimated 28,000 fans over its three days. He says that the total attendance for all five classes in Columbia last year was 32,000."
Columbia was the same? The attendance for the Final 4 this year will by far surpass Columbia. This isn't a knock on Springfield bc Columbia was the same. I wish they would have the games in a smaller venue to have a better atmosphere. The arenas are too big for the crowds that these games draw.

I think you must have misunderstood what I was saying. Columbia was the same in the fact that the arenas or so large that they do not have the intimate atmosphere. When the games have 3k or what ever small amount they do they don't have as good of a "feel" in an arena that seats 11k +
I would disagree....I have been a part of a Class 5 Boys final at Mizzou and the Class 1 Boys final at JQH.
While more fresh in my memory due to time I would say that JQH provides a more intimate feeling than Mizzou.
Drury I think might be too small for some of the games. The arena size you want is pretty scarce, the Show Me Center in Cape comes to mind.
Why not have it at the Family Arena in St Charles?
Which teams attended plus proximity would make a big difference every year. I'm not saying one is better than the other just that you can not really draw any conclusion due to this number.
The Missouri State High School Activities Association stated the paid attendance for both weekends combined at the state tournament was 35,000 and expects the total to go up a bit once it finishes its calculations.
That number is close to what it had the last five years at Mizzou. MSHSAA counted 32,709 last year, 48,310 in 2016, 39,822 in 2015, 37,423 in 2014 and 44,334 in 2013.
As I thought you can't really draw conclusions from one year's totals.
It boils down, simply, to the fact that teams that don’t bring large numbers with them made it to the Final 4. Sikeston is the only one that truly traveled…Liberty had a decent section, but not great. Kearney had a very decent following. I didn’t see the championship crowd, but the semis for Class 5 were incredibly small….Jennings, Grandview, and Ray South didn’t have large sections. Those small schools bring the whole town, which is the difference. If Logan-Rogersville, Kickapoo, Glendale, Ozark, Republic, Rolla, etc made it, you would’ve seen far greater numbers. Small towns like Sikeston, or schools like Borgia, bring more people than the city schools. You'll notice that the attendance in 2013 was higher as well. Also a year that Sikeston went.
The one exception to the rule was the Barstow vs. Father Tolton championship. Neither school had great followings, but state-wide interest to see the Porters against the defending champions brought out a ton of sideline fans.

A little more than that with a packed house, but 4000 is a pretty good number and parking would be a problem with that many folks. The hotel situation has gotten better here but not nearly enough other stuff to do here to host a state tourney.Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff is about 4,000 for basketball?
