I know there are times to use both the over and under front, but which do you prefer in a 4-3 and why. If you prefer the over front do you like a 7,8, or 9 tech as the strong side end. (again I know there are times for all 3).

In a 4-3, I think there is some value to switching between a 7 and a 9, but 7 is better vs the run. 9 probably has pass rushing advantages.

When you start discussing the 6-2 Stack I would love to get in the convo... but the 4-3 is just, blah.

you might be asking yourself.. 6-2 stack? you play a goal line defense the whole game? That's crazy!!!

Let me tell you this, It's so Crazy, it might work.

I'm assuming your 8 is a traditional head up 6 tech? To me if you are in an over front in a 4-3 you can't play your DE in a 7. The DE is never going to be able to spill any blockers because he is going to get washed by the TE (assuming you're like me and don't have a D1 player at DE). If he is in an 6 or 9 he is able to do his job vs run or pass. Run = spill. Pass = contain

How do you play empty?

6-2 stack monster will tear up that junky Dead T. That is one offensive offense.

I agree, Rufus. If you play with a 9, better put him on a tilt in my opinion to get him down with the down block.

assuming u have a 3 then a 7 to the te, now you have opened yourself up to several options, you can run midline at that 3 tec and read, you can run iv at that seven, double the 3, you can run ov at the seven which will let you double the 3 with the gt and double the 7 with tte. so you can run anything you want at that defense, a 9 puts you out there in bfe so i can still run anything i want, if i had to run a 43 then i am going with a 8 so i can play games with that de, i'm not a even front guy, i like the 34, good ol okie defense

You just became my favorite poster! 3-4, 5-2, 30, 50 or what ever you want to call it is my favorite all time defense. We found when I was coaching that when we were in the 30 we could take a less athletic down lineman (fat kid) and replaced him with an 'athlete' at OLB. 2 stand up outside LB's made it possible to use combo coverages- either inside/outside or up/back doubles as well as blitz from any of the 8 other defensive positions and still remain gap sound. Our basic 30 used a 'robber' tech with the 2 safeties who are generally unaccounted for - unless you play Webb City - which we did and they did. A 30 lends itself to pattern reading for pass coverages as well. Goal line d is taken care of by replacing one safety with another nose to make a double nose look. One had to be doubled - that freed up the other as well as the playside ILB. The 30 has my vote especially if most of your opponents run the spread. Just my opinion based on what worked for us a long, long, long time ago.

Aw come on runyouover. I was just getting ready to add that I had some luck against a pro I team with an over look (5,3, Strong shade) then on the play side had a 4 and a 6. Had SS 7 x2 on TE. BEGGED the offense to run weak and they couldn't get anyone to the backers. Running strong it was the same. They couldn't get TE and T off the 4 and 6 to get to the second level.
