In a weird way, them and the Brewers bumbling along may set the Birds franchise back years. Didn’t buy, didn’t sell. Hanging on to bad contracts, the few prospects they have, and playing declining assets. It’s an odd spot.

Very strange season in the NL Central. After being 5 games out about a week ago the Birds are back in 1st place all alone tonight. Talk about hot and cold, the top 3 have been all over the place this year.

Cubs shut out in back to back games at HOME...... :D:D
We had best remember 7 of our last 10 games are against the Cubs. Better keep building that lead and have a nice cushion for the last couple of weeks or all this could be for nothing cause there ain't be a wild card from the central.

If he randomly bats DeJong third again as he bizarrely did tonight only to have him K four times, we can forget playoffs. He batted twice with Wong on third and one out and never made contact. Terrible move.

We had to know this wasn't going to go well when Carp backed away from the runner at 3rd and missed the tag instead of sticking his nose in there and get the out. If he gets that out it's a runner at 1st with 2 outs and the fly ball would have been the 3rd out with no run scoring. :(

It's not that bad, really. I wish the minor leagues were better, and I don't love the Goldie deal lengthwise, but you can survive the Carp extension (which never made sense even on the day it was signed, but whatever)

Molina is up next year. Fowler and Carp in 2. You can survive that.

The real issue is the amount we're investing in our own old guys who just don't seem to justify the terms being given to them. What was the point of giving Yadi and Carp those multiyear extensions in their mid 30s a full year before they hit FA? I mean, I sort of expect us to give an extra year to an FA like Fowler or Cecil, but, sheesh, there was no reason on earth to pay our old guys like that when you could go year by year with them.

The contracts for the younger guys generally have turned out ok or better - DeJong, Wong, Martinez type of deals are all going to add surplus value over the lives of those contracts. We don't have to pretend our old guys can still do the same.
