Very happy for them. Played with class all night.

Glad they played like their old self tonight, thursday was rough.

Last 2 class 1 State Champs come from north Mo. with perfect records.

We be playing some decent ball up here..... congrats Stanberry.

Yes Congrats to a very well balanced and very disciplined ball team! I was very impressed with the Bulldogs last evening, that's a lot of athleticism for a class 1 team and are very well coached.

After watching both of the C1 semi's I thought that Stanberry and Glasgow were the two best teams. Stanberry's size/skill combo is very impressive for a C1 public school. Pretty nice whenever you have a 6'5 soph as good as the younger Hailey kid as your 6th man. They were a fun team to watch.

Man oh man. It really has been hard to resist the urge to post on here during the season. I don't know if there was a team in the state that was talked about more on MoSports this season than Stanberry and so much of it was negative. Strange for a team that went undefeated and only played in 6 single-digit games this season. I don't know why if they didn't win every game by 30, people thought there had to be "something wrong" or that they weren't good enough for a title run.

Couldn't be prouder of the season the Stanberry boys put together. An incredible follow up to their undefeated State Football Championship, as well. As has been mentioned already, they are the only school in MSHSAA history to win undefeated football and basketball titles in the same school year.

Awfully surprised to see that so many people who couldn't quit talking about Stanberry during the season have yet to say anything since last night. Probably more surprised at the sudden change of tune from ag-man, who should know as much as anyone about what it takes to go through a season undefeated.

WGTigerdad67's posts from the middle of the season were exactly why I didn't say anything during the year. Walnut Grove had an incredibly talented team this year, but I guess it couldn't just be left at that. He seemed intent on making comments to talk his own team up and to talk down on others and their schedule, going as far as getting hostile with anyone who even just asked about their team. After questioning whether the teams in the north have "been tested by great competition throughout the season," both Northwest Missouri teams in Class 1 took home the title.

The difference is that of all the talk on Stanberry throughout the season, none of it came from people from Stanberry. I chose not to say anything even when I wanted to and just let people talk. You can only tell so much from a box score. You don't know if someone was playing sick or rolled their ankle in the 1st quarter or if there were other extraneous factors that affected play. Stanberry even had a sick starter in and out of the hospital this weekend in Columbia.

Thanks to people like nwbball who approach things with a level head on here and provide useful discussion. I enjoyed chatting NWMO basketball with you last year on MoSports, sorry I stayed away this season. Coach, your team would have had a great shot at the title this weekend, had you made it. Good luck to you next year.

Your post confused me,
"Sudden change of tune" ?

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't recall saying anything negative about Stanberry.

"Sudden change of tune" ?

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't recall saying anything negative about Stanberry.

You asserted multiple times that Stanberry would "get smoked" if they "didn't play better" and also said twice that we were "awful to watch" on Thursday.

Again, goes with the theme of posts about Stanberry all year that if they didn't beat everyone by 30, they weren't good enough. Glasgow lost by 20 to Gideon and I would think anyone who watched both of their games would say they played a lot better against Stanberry than in the 3rd place game. You may have thought it was supposed to be easy, but I can assure you the team did not approach it that way. Glasgow is a good team and they played a great game. Still, I would think you should know as much as anyone that it's not just a free ride to an undefeated season.

I might be taking your posts the wrong way, but I know I am not the only one who thought that. At the very least, saying we were awful to watch is negative.

Guess you need to read all of the posts that were made about your team again. You also need to read my posts again I just rebutted posts when people were saying that Stanberry was the winner before they played the games. Your team had a great season and a ton of posts were very complimentary of your team. Wg also had a great season and just happened to not shoot the ball well against Stanberry. I will give Stanberry the credit that they deserve you won and you are the State Champions.

You read those posts wrong and people corrected you on it. People only thought that they would be in the final, not win it all like you implied. And those are direct quotes you said on the girls basketball board about teams' schedules. People complimented Stanberry, of course, but many were negative if they didn't flat out blow everyone out, as if you have to win every game by 30.

Long time lurker...bearcat, I don't think there was much negative talk, only they were the big story this year. That's what happens when you are ranked 1 wire to wire. You sounded a lot like MJ when he torched people during his hall of fame speech. They won, they played great, and completed an historic run. All credit is deserved, just don't act like the odds and all the people didn't pick you...might want to visit the poll to check on that.

I was very interested to see if someone would make a point of this after the season. I was baffled through the year at some of the comments WGTigerdad67 had about his teams. Went so far as to say Mound City girls haven't played the competition that the south teams had when Mound City cruised through the tournament. Also to say WG's entire lineup could be on the all state list.

Not exactly sure what ag-man (R.S.) is confused about either. Made comments earlier about Stanberry could get "smoked" and "rolled" and their game was awful to watch.
I really enjoyed watching the Stanberry, Winston and North Andrew boys play this season. Many times these teams were thrown under the bus for strength of schedule and not playing bigger schools. After checking I think there are 6 of 10 class 2 schools in Stanberry's conference. I was really happy with how Stanberry represented the NW region and showed there is a lot of great ball in the north. Winston and N.A. both would have competed at a high level at the state tournament and most likely won it. Just based off Mo Sports posts it was extremely easy for me to root for all teams in the north throughout the season and post season. Many people I have talked to feel the exact same way. Congratulations to Stanberry's boys on a 44-0 football and basketball season.

Well it is what it is cruising to the finals means you have won before you play. I gave your team the credit that they deserved you won a State Championship with a great basketball team. Congrats. Wg is very young and we can't wait for the upcoming seasons.

I do indeed think you are taking my post the wrong way.
If you will scroll through the previous post, you will see I have been supportive of Stanberry.
I have been rooting for them and hoping to see them in CoMo.
Stating a FACT that they had a poor game against Glasgow, and would get "smoked" if they played that way against WG, in my opinion, is not being negative......it's stating the obvious.

Seeing a team you support have a bad game is "awful" to watch, especially at CoMo. They are a much better team than they showed thurs night, and I was dissapointed how things turned out in that game.

They righted the ship and won Sat. And are State Champs.....once again, congrats.

With all being said, how much different would the final have looked of Thomazin would have had an average game. Man, major credit to stanberry's defensive effort. Meinders definitely stepped up big...and how about the technical? Kind of Bill belicheck-like :)

I apologize if that was not your intent, but like I said I am not the only one who thought that. I do know that you have been supportive of Stanberry through the year, and was not meaning that - just this weekend.

I still contend that Glasgow is a good team and I know that Stanberry did not approach the game as if they would roll. The Jackets played a great game, the Bulldogs did their usual thing on defense and they won. When we play defense the way we did this weekend, I have no complaints. You're going to have off nights on offense sometimes. But, they lived off their defense in the postseason, holding teams to under 50 in all 7 postseason games.

I don't feel the north has gotten a lot of credit in general in the past and they have gotten it done the last two years. It's a different brand of basketball, but there are a lot of great teams.

I'm pretty sure North Andrew or Jefferson's girls could have won state this year too had it been them. I was shocked when Mercer and SW Livingston went down...

I do believe Jefferson's girls were the second best team in class 1 - to the extent of my knowledge. They were the team to beat MC which isn't completely surprising because they played them 4 times. One of those was in overtime when Eaton scored 38 points too. MC girls were just too much on defense and too efficient on offense. Congratulations to them.

With all being said, how much different would the final have looked of Thomazin would have had an average game. Man, major credit to stanberry's defensive effort. Meinders definitely stepped up big...and how about the technical? Kind of Bill belicheck-like :)

I would have liked to see him play an average game to make the game a little bit better. His performance was outstanding in the state semi. He is an incredible player. I expect WG will be back down to the state tournament in the next few years. They had a great number of young players including Thomazin and Gilkey. I noticed the coaches boy is also a freshman - was wondering if he has a shot at being as good as his older brother? WG should be in for more state runs.

WGTigerdad - I understand some what you are saying about people saying Stanberry would cruise to the final but they were strictly talking about beating glasgow. Also from the tone of them I don't think any of those posts were from Stanberry people. I never saw any of them post. That is the point Bearcat is trying to make.

I'd think Gideon would have an argument on the comment about Glasgow being better than them. I didn't get to see Stanberry play durning the season, nor am I anywhere nearby of the teams that they play so my picks were off familiarity of the teams I have watched, articles online and posts on here. Stanberry is the best team in class 1 and I gladly congratulate them and admit my wrong for picking against them! Way to shut me up!! Congrats again

I never said that the entire Walnut Grove Lady Tigers team should be on the All State List.
I did however say that I wasn't sure if the Northern teams played as tough of a schedule as the Southern teams in Class 1 Girls basketball. And that has been pretty evident for the previous 4 seasons with all State Champions in this class coming out of the South.

My post said "Went so far as to say Mound City girls haven't played the competition that the south teams had when Mound City cruised through the tournament. Also to say WG's entire lineup could be on the all state list."

Again you are so quick to be defensive you don't remember what you posted before. I mentioned what you said about the MC girls and then I also mentioned WG's entire lineup. I did not say WG Lady Tigers. Earlier this year Thomazin and Meinders were talked about for an all state list. You said "I don't think that we can say that Thomazin or Meinders are better both are having a great season with a very good and deep team around them. Both kids can shoot it and drive to the basket very well. But there are 9 kids on this team that get a lot of playing time every game out. So I could add two or three more kids to that list in my book" Thomazin and Meinders and 2-3 other WG kids on the all state list.. Come on...

Again WG had a great year and they are a great team. I wished Thomazin would have played a little better to make the game more fun to watch instead of Stanberry being in control the entire time. I highly doubt Thomazin has seen a defender like the Aye kid from Stanberry tho. His quickness and length were the difference maker in that game. I wonder if Stanberry realizes the defensive talent they have in him. They will miss him when he is gone.

Having spent my summers at my grandparents' farm near Grant City and playing summer baseball against schools/towns like Stanberry, I was happy to see Stanberry win the crown. I am now a transplant in southwest Missouri and follow the local high school basketball teams. You can read the linked story below about Walnut Grove below and get a feel for how the team and coach carry themselves.

Here is a few more articles to broaden your perspective.
