My general thoughts on the season and moving into post season…

Joplin - I wasn’t sure about them. Losing a lot of starters I halfway expected them to fall a bit short of the sky high expectations even though they returned key talent. But they haven’t missed a beat. I like their chances but it’s always tough to predict how they will do vs Class 6 schools from other parts of the state that play Class 6 schedule all season. Last year Joplin proved they could hang so we’ll see about this year.

Webb City - They started the season looking to me like a team that could beat most of the COC but maybe not a state caliber team. But their defense has been astounding and they are playing well. Having said that their path to the final is tough. A potential district vs WP is far from a gimme and the road beyond there gets even worse. But if they make it to the final, I like their chances vs anyone on the other side of the bracket.

Carthage - Based on the returning talent and things I heard, I expected reverse roles from what we've seen with Carthage and Joplin - with Carthage turbo clocking nearly ever opponent and Joplin winning most of their games but looking really clunky here and there along the way. But this team has not been the same since Webb City. Injuries have been a factor since then but penalties, and ‘minor’ mistakes have been a factor since game 1. Passing has been problematic to fall back on when in a tight spot offensively. But still, for the most part they’ve done what needed to be done to win games. In my mind Carthage is a solid team that still isn’t quite playing to full potential. Their quadrant of the bracket looks by far the weakest in C5 so that may give them a few weeks work out some kinks and injuries.

After that we’ve got CJ, Ozark, Nixa, and Willard all with just 4 wins, then Repmo, Neosho and Branson rounding out the bottom. None of them seem likely to do much other than beat each other in early rounds. I think it's a long shot but it’s conceivable Carthage could be upset in their district, perhaps by Nixa.

Overall the COC was as expected with 3 good teams and then everyone else. I’d really like to see some of these schools, specifically Nixa, Ozark, Branson get back to where they’ve been in the recent past and force a more challenging league. Really there is not a single school in this conference that doesn’t have the potential be good in my opinion. Willard always seems to be on the cusp of turning a corner. Neosho always has big athletic kids but coaching turnover among other things has been an issue there. If Republic had defense they might have won a lot of games.

I agree with most of your takes. I think Joplin will do well until they play a team with a big talented RB. That's why they don't match up well against Carthage. The defense is somewhat soft. But, they started playing Isaiah Davis more at MLB and he can be physical. Offensively, I think they can score with just about anyone. They have a lot of talent on offense. Davis is averaging over 10 yards/rush and Westmoreland is incredible. Tash is also very underrated at QB.
I think Webb can take the state title. They seem to be getting better each week, especially on defense.
I agree on Carthage. They haven't been the same since the Webb game. I don't know if it's injuries or confidence or both. I can't see them losing to Nixa, though.

Joplin wins until they face a team that they can’t handle up front. That is where I think Joplin was better last year. At QB,RB,WR they are as talented as anyone in the state.

Carthage is the toughest to figure out. I see them having no problem at all making it to the Semis. I don’t think anyone on that side of bracket is as strong as Vianney was last couple years but for Carthage to advance they need to a second option besides just running the QB ( who is very good) 25 times.

Webb City has a great shot.

The rest of the league is really tough to figure out. I think the bottom of the league is better. By comparison I think any of the teams in the bottom are much stronger than the bottom of the Ozark conference but ultimately it looks like the Ozark was Camdenton, West Plains, Lebanon and then everyone else. Carl Junction and Willard have looked good in short stretches but very inconsistent. Republic and Ozark talented on offense but issues on defense.

With no out of league games the entire strength of the league will be based on WC, Joplin and Carthage.

That 56 yard FGA changed Carthage's entire season. They were playing Webb tough and would've continued to do so had it not been for that kick killing their confidence in the coaches and themselves, especially after falling short by a yard after outplaying Joplin for 85% of that game.
Webb always gets better as the season goes on and that's obviously due to the excellent coaching. There are other teams who seem to be just as talented but can the coaches put that talent in the position to beat Webb? My gut says no.
Joplin's D looked absolutely pathetic in the Webb and Carthage (both teams handed them the win) games so someone will get them before the title game.

I was pretty curious about Carthage and it was never brought up . The week after the Webb game they had a whole bunch of guys (key guys) not play and won the game with a freshman. Those guys played the whole game against Webb and didn't play the next week under mysterious "injuries" . I was wondering if there was more to that story ? They haven't been the same since that game for sure .

Anyhow my take is Joplin has one of the better and most balanced offenses I've seen they can score on probably anybody but I don't trust their defense against a really good team . They should at least make it out of districts though .

Carthage ....they can make a deep run but they lack depth to win state . Good in the first half but get worn down because they play alot of guys both ways .

Webb I think has the best chance to win state but probably the toughest path

Dont know the answer but I actually wondered the same thing!

Who knows ; they are a good team though . Especially on offense

I didn't think Joplin looked that good against CJ last Friday. The score was only 27-14 midway thru the 3rd quarter and CJ was at the Joplin 20 before throwing a pick. Joplin was up 13-0 after the first minute of the game off of a kick off return and a pick 6. From that point in the game until late in the 3rd Joplin and CJ scored twice each. It broke open in the 4th when CJ ran out of gas.
