COC Pick Em 2022 - Week 1

I'm going to do this again for anyone who wants to participate! Quick reminder on how it works - Just list your picks anytime prior to the start of the game each week, please list in the same order I listed the games. Posts edited after the start of the game will be disqualified. Anyone is welcome to make selections and commentary at any point in the season but only those who start this week will be included in the stats. Anyone with more than 2 weeks without any picks will be removed from the stats.

Each correct pick is worth at least 1 point but many may be worth extra. If the road team wins it's a 1/2pt bonus. If the the less favored team wins also a bonus - less than 45% pick the winner it's an extra 1/2pt. If less than 25% picked the winner it's a full extra point. For example only 12% picked Joplin to beat Webb City last year AND it was a road win so it was worth 2.5pts for the few people that picked Joplin.

My picks:
  • Carthage - I see this as a tossup but I'll go with Carthage at home. Republic will be a tough opponent to iron out the defense so we'll see. This might be more of a game than some people are expecting. Could see a similar game as Ozark a few years ago where it was close, then Ozark took a decent lead. Carthage finally clicked late and tried to take it with onside kick that the officials couldn't agree on.
  • Ozark - I think CJ will be in this but just going to be a case of not enough horses against a much larger school with more on the field at home.
  • Nixa - Nixa is getting a good opportunity with a load of experienced talent attacking a WC team early in the season that may still be prone to turnovers. WC will probably be playing in November when the rest of the COC has turned in their gear but I won't be surprised if they open this season with a loss at home.
  • Neosho - Neosho is at home and I'm looking for them to be improved over last year.
  • Joplin - Depending on Joplin's defense I could see Branson keeping it closer than expected but still don't see the Pirates winning at Junge.

Can't win the pool the first week, but you sure can lose it. Let's ride.

Ozark- I think CJ is a year away from winning a game like this.

Nixa- I would pick Webb if this was week 7.

Interesting that (as of now) if Webb City were to win they would trigger double upset points. Can't recall Webb EVER being the underdog in any game for as long as I've done this game.
 
Carthage (won't be surprised if their offense is better than last year)
CJ
Webb (not betting on Nixa until they prove they're worth all the hype they've gotten the last couple years)
Neosho (feel like they'll win 3 games this year)
Joplin (coach is too good to lose a game like this)

Carthage--Not sure REPMO is ready just yet. The RB from Carthage is just too much for them.

Ozark--Ozark probably out-athletes them in the end. This could be closer than most think.

Webb City--I have no logical reason other than it's Webb and it's at Webb. Here's hoping they don't fumble 5 times like they have a tendency to do in the early goings.

Neosho--Two programs in similar places. I get the feeling the trajectory of Neosho is better than that of Willards.

Joplin--Might be the only stinker game of the week. I see Joplin big, but maybe not. Not sure how much they graduated and their JV wasn't very good last season.
