I plan on going back to school in january. I am not playing college ball anymore but will be looking to get my degree and coach later in high school. I have 20 credit hours now, my question is how many credit hours do you need to have to be a assistant but not a teacher? I just want to get my foot in the door somewhere and learn. A friend told me I will need a coaching minor but he was not sure on how many hours where needed or if I could do this without a degree. I have seen numerous coaches do this while still in college this being 1a. Any other pros/cons would be helpful in my quest to become a coach too so some help would be nice.

You are "supposed" to have 60 credit hours and have a substitute certificate to coach. I know some school let that slip by though.

you don't have to have a coaching minor, give the dese a call, i think you can take a weekend course that will cover you without being a teacher, i don't know if that still means you have to have 60 hrs,

To be a head coach you have to be a certified teacher. An assistant you just have to have 60 hours and then the school can file through MSHSAA for you to be one....like a hardship(they tried to find someone in the district, but couldn't type thing)
Then you will have to take a Coaches course and a First Aid/CPR course. You have to do it through their instructors(can't go out on your own). They can be time consuming. Also, you are supposed to take the MSHSAA handbook test as well....it's pretty easy...they mail you the test and you can use the book or other sources to help you answer it.
**It is worth it and I recommend it....take any advantage you can as far as getting your foot in the door. Plus, anyone that has coaching experience or is willing to coach will stand out over those that are not.

Rec Cross or American Heart Association will meet the CPR requirements. You may wish to get your training in defibrillator use as well. Many schools are getting these and it may look good on the ol'resume.
