In a show of respect and admiration for their teammates, two Carl Junction juniors ran out of bounds on purpose at the one yard line in Friday’s district opener versus McDonald County. Who can say where the idea originated from, but the selfless act of these underclassmen gave a few seniors chances to score touchdowns in what could’ve been their final home game.
Understanding that playing against a team with a 5-4 record could serve up a stout test, when the CJ QB saw a chance just 49 seconds into the game to set up the short score he may have wondered if a similar opportunity would’ve presented itself again. And given that the senior who scored on the short dive was wearing a brace due to a significant knee injury midway through the season, nobody could’ve expected the senior to carry the load for 30, 20 or even 10 yards on his own.
The fact that the juniors found two more chances to do the same thing was a blessing for two more senior Bulldogs who have meant so much to the program. One is a two-way starter so getting a dive from his usual fullback position was not necessarily that noticeable. The third opportunity was given to the season’s initial backup QB who had instead found a role from week 1 on as a defensive back.
Hats off to these young men who would rather see their teammates get some well-deserved moments in the sun rather than add six more points to their own impressive seasons.
