There has been a lot of talk here about the Class of 2018 around the state, so I thought I would give a quick update about a pair in SGF that are having quite a season.

Glendale 2018 G Jordan Walton will likely set new standard for points by freshman in SPS history this year. Walton currently has 324 points and there are at least three games remaining. Record is believed to be Dorial Green-Beckham's 349 at Hillcrest in 2008-09.

There isn't really a record of points scored for freshmen in Springfield that we know of, however, prior to the 1990s, most SPS teams rarely played freshmen. DGB's 349 points scored as a ninth-grader is believed to be the record.

Currently, Glendale freshman Jordan Walton has 324, with at least three games left, and Monty Johal has 271. Those two have really come on late in the season. In last three games, Walton has scored 26 against Central, 21 against Kickapoo and 25 against Parkview.

Teammate Monty Johal could also challenge record, currently has 271 points. Johal has had several 20-point games late in the season.

Walton plays his summer ball for MoKan Elite, and Johal plays for Yanders Law.

350 might the record for points for a freshman in Springfield? I guess that seems pretty low to me for a place that has produced some pretty good players. That's about 15 ppg. I may be way off base here but I'd bet there have been many a freshman in the St.Louis area that have done that.

The best freshman I've seen this year

Carte'are Gordon--6'7", 250 Lbs. and plays @ Vianney High school.

13.5 PPG---61% from the field.

8.3 Rebs. Per Game

This freshman sensation is without a doubt gonna be in the big time when he graduates from high school. He has great hands, great center moves, soft touch, runs the floor well and can handle the ball. Carte'are can " Bust out dribble " after the rebound and led the fast break and can dunk from a standing position I better stop this build up before the Missouri basketball program sends a Rep to Vianney High school.

It is my understand that Carte'are has already bested the Chaminade center who has been offered a basketball scholarship by the Missouri Tigers.

If anyone has seen a better freshman then the 6'7", 250 Lbs. Carte'are Gordon------------Put his name down under this thread?

Re: The best freshman I've seen this year

Sounds like the one's Mowestern described are scoring more than Gordon. Like I said maybe 15ppg is great for a freshman but it seems low to me for a record in a place like Springfield. I couldn't even tell you what Tyler Hansbrough averaged as freshmen, but it was probably in that same neighborhood. I guess it also depends on the upper classmen on that same team and what they're doing. Only so many points to go around.

What about the Weider kid from Vienna Fr. 6 3 scored 517 in 22 games so far this season. Not to bad in my opinion!!

Weider kid is very good. IMO there is no way in the world he is 6'3 though. I'd guess 6'1 at most

Unofficial SPS policy of frosh playing varsity might explain record...

I can't talk for the other four SPS high schools, but at Glendale I know that Jack Roberts never started a freshman in his entire 21-year career at GHS and only Kurt Brockman in '80-'81 got ANY playing time as a frosh. It was an unofficial policy at GHS under Roberts that freshmen just weren't going to play at the varsity level. People made a big deal about Coach Keltner playing two frosh in '94-'95 (Cory Nibert and Rob Will) and I recall Deven Mitchell playing as a frosh at Kickapoo in '99-'00 caused a lot of talk. Not sure what the deal was in Springfield about frosh playing varsity boys basketball, but I guess it was one of those un-written rules back in the day. Now, it's not really a big deal outside of the junior and senior players parents getting their underwear in a knot over little Bobby not getting as much playing time as some ninth grader!

Also, most of the big time scorers in Missouri history tend to come from smaller schools where one kid, who's pretty good, can play all four years and must score a whole bunch of points (2,000+) for the team to compete. At the Class L, 4A, & 5 level in Springfield, you'll rarely have a huge scorer unless the kid plays A LOT over four years. Tyler Rullman scored about 1,400 in just two seasons at the varsity level. DGB scored over 2,000 points, because he was a starter for four straight seasons.

Whether it's a big deal in St. Louis or not, Jordan's total is of an historical nature down here and I can't wait to see him play over the next three years. I just wish the team would win more!!!!!! This is the first time in Glendale history we've had three straight double-digit losing seasons. I hope things look up in the future! Not used to losing this much in Falconland.
