Kansas City, MO
Kearney 6-0 #1
Platte County 4-2 #2
Smithville 6-0 #5
Lafayette 4-2 #10
Excelsior Springs 5-1 #11
Benton 2-4
Tonka 1-5
Savannah 1-5

Maybe on paper they're the best district in Class 4.

Paper didn't have anything to do with Kearney wins over Class 5 top 10 teams Liberty North and Belton. Or Platte County beating #4 in Class 5, Liberty. Name a district that is better? No other Class 4 teams have wins that good this year.

Still not buying the "class" argument, but yes would agree at this point this looks to be the best overall class 4 district.

Class - large 4 beats small 5. Is this any different than medium 3 beating large 3? Every game I've been to the last few years has 11 vs 11, and similar sized rosters on each sideline except once in awhile.

Yes yes yes, of course there's a big difference in class 1 vs class 6. But I'm watching 3 vs 4, or now 4 vs 5 all of the time and overall size of school isn't the deciding factor in any of these games.

Wrong.....

Raytown South 3-3 #7
Grandview 2-4 #17
Grain Valley 4-2 #13
Harrisonville 3-3 #14
Nevada 2-4
Northeast (KC) 1-5
Van Horn 1-5
East (KC) 0-6

medium 4 vs medium 5 can be a pretty big difference.... not that it's been the case in these instances though...

Not a CLASS argument so much as a QUALITY argument...they are beating ranked opponents, that happened to be ranked top 10 in Class 5. So they are good wins...Kearney also beat #7 in Class 4, Raytown South. Kearney has beaten three teams ranked higher than Nixa, for example. Platte County has beaten a higher ranked team (Liberty) than anyone in Class 4..., and they have played close games with Belton and Staley (Also high quality Class 5 teams.)

Lafeyett lost to C3 dist 8 chillicothe by 10.
exelsior lost to C3 dist 8 richmond by 49
Benton lost to C3 dist 8 maryville by 42
Maryville will again beat smithville on friday

Kearney is great but their road to state would be tougher if they were in C3 Dist 8.

1) Lafayette lost by 2 not 10.
2). The highest rated team Richmond has played is Excelsior.
3) the highest rated team Maryville has played is Chillocothe.
4) I'd love to see Maryville play a tough Class 4/5 schedule, but cupcakes and Classless 92 point games seem to be where they are at...
5). The road is no harder for Kearney with teams that play cupcake schedules....now Platte County has been playing Staley, Liberty, Belton... Sorry, C3 District 8 teams wouldn't be able to hang with the gauntlet PC and Kearney go through.

if the whole argument is based on rankings, Why if the rankings are Wrong?... I mean most high school rankings are... what does that mean?

25-5 combined record thus far for the top 5 teams in the district is satisfactory enough for me at this time. Comparing scores, playing up, beating ranked teams is fine to discuss as well. But without looking at each of the other class 4 districts, who else would you pitch right now as better than this district?

Our SW MO district has 4th ranked Webb and 5th ranked Carl Junction, but our top 5 is only 17-13 thus far and nobody third or below has done anything impressive yet.

And it all works out in the end. Excelsior is probably not that good--but they did beat some good programs that people respect, like Harrisonville and Odessa. Put them against Webb, Kearney, etc...its turbo clock time by the half. And Smithville is undefeated. But Maryville will take them out this week. On paper, it does look good to have five teams with great records and strong performances.

OK here is the problem with all of this: How do you basically compare apples and oranges? Rankings are basically meaningless and, given the SW and NW regions rarely play one another in the regular season, we just don't know which region is the better at this point.

History. Look at the % of top ten teams and championships. 72% are from the West. Over 50% from KC. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out, that if a team is a top 10 team in KC--they are pretty damned good.

Chillicothe won 31-21. I was there. It was 31-14 until about 2:30 left in the game when Lafayette scored their final TD.
