Holding Yates to 3 is crazy.

Carthage is just very small.

Did she have 10 blocks? Maybe. That will be updated on Max Preps in a few days.

Depends on how closely the kid keeping blocked shots was watching. It felt to me like she was close to 10 in the first half.

The team has their stats kept by a teacher volunteer. Not sure how often they disagree with the official stats.

23 points, 17 rebounds, and 8 blocks for Kylie if you count Yates going up for a shot and Kylie being able to tie it up and force a jump ball. Never quite sure how they score that. But not a triple double.

Speaking of stats not adding up… so the Carthage post above has Buerge with 28 and Scott with 23.
When the game was over, I had a picture of the scorebook texted to me and it had Buerge with 26 and Scott with 23.
Joplin Globe story shared by the CJ Athletics Facebook page has a lede that the two combined for 51 points.

To make matters worse … over the boys basketball message board, the same person who posts Carthage box scores here and there has the boys game tonight and it is loaded with mistakes. I had the Carthage scorebook sent to me and it has at least one mistake I’ve found this far and I’ve yet to get the CJ scorebook.

It’s amazing how technology has improved so much yet, scoring a simple high school basketball game is still a challenge.

Kind of hard when the schools don't even provide rosters and you're left scrambling for them on other sources like MSHSAA and MaxPreps. Carl Junction's boys roster has them listed with 0 players on the roster this year with Coach Brock still coaching the team according to MaxPreps. Could be worse. At least they don't charge money for rosters like KSHSAA schools do.

I absolutely hear you on the roster issue. I never have and never will trust MaxPreps for anything. MSHSAA team pages for CJ has rosters and the varsity scores are current, but unfortunately JV and freshman results are hit and miss.
When your close friend Anvil Welch is always asking me to bring him programs from games I attend, more and more schools are going to non-print programs (CJ went online with rosters this year) which can make it tough to keep score.
CJ does post rosters for its basketball teams (girls and boys, freshmen, JV and varsity) on the athletics page of the school website along with visiting team rosters:
https://www.cjr1.org/domain/38 (boys)

https://www.cjr1.org/domain/41 (girls)

I think it is odd that CJ only has 9 girls on varsity. I understand there is no one else in the program good enough to play any minutes but you would think they would bring up one more just so you don't have to play a starter in a turbo clock situation

I apologize I don’t know your identity AC100, but with a question like that, I suggest going right to the coach and asking. I find Brad to be very approachable and anytime I have a question, I just go ask him in person. I find texting and social media forms of communication to be ineffective due to the lack tone. It’s difficult to ask a question unless a person can “hear” the tone in which you ask.

Well I don't have a kid on the team anymore so I don't know about doing that. It just seems odd to me.

A lot of schools have the Hudl camera. Hudl usually does the stats for the games. I know points and fouls are kept in the official scorebook. Blocks and steals and so on are usually done later.

Had time today to get an official answer on the question posed last night on blocked shots resulting in a held ball.
The possession arrow is a key component on how to properly score the possession in game stats.
When an offensive player shoots the ball, that counts as a field goal attempt, if the shot is blocked, it counts as a blocked shot for the defensive player.
If the blocked shot results in a held ball, if the possession belongs to the defense, the defender who blocked the shot gets credit for a defensive rebound. If the possession belongs to the offense, the shooter gets an offensive rebound off their own blocked shot.

A separate situation … assuming the shot is blocked and the ball is picked up by another defensive player, that defensive player gets credit for the rebound off the blocked shot, if that player is then tied up, depending on the possession arrow, should the ball stay with team who just got the rebound, then it’s nothing more than a held ball. However, if the rebounding player is tied up and the possession goes back to the team who just shot the ball and had it blocked, then after crediting the player with a rebound, you must credit them with a turnover and the player who created the tie up is credited with a steal.

Hope that helps clarify proper scoring of a blocked shot that results in a held ball.

Great detail and also points out how easily someone could miss something if they don’t have this pretty well memorized or otherwise can see the common sense in all of it.

Honestly I’ve always like to score it like this, even without having access to this detail. Carthage had the ball, took a shot and got stuffed as we used to call it. Ref called held ball, possession arrow to CJ, so blocked shot and defensive rebound for Kylie (although I admit I didn’t give her a rebound, blew that one myself, and thus probably her 18th board I missed).

There was one play where both Kylie and Desi appeared to block the shot. When in doubt, I tend to give credit to the true shot blocker with all the career stats. If Maxpreps showed Kylie with 6, I hope it shows Desi with 1.

Lastly I suppose, the final pay of the first quarter was a blocked shot by Kylie going out of bounds as the buzzer sounded. Maybe that one was missed by the official scorer.

No big deal on all of the above, was really just trying to figure out if she came close to a triple double.

Any time there is a shot taken, there is a rebound opportunity.
For example… missed free throw that is the first of two shots is credited as a deadball rebound because neither team has an opportunity to grab the rebound.
Same for shots taken at the end of the quarter, half or game … when neither team has an opportunity to secure the rebound it’s credited as a deadball rebound.

A side note to shots taken at the end of the quarter, half or game … if it’s a reasonable shot take by an offensive player credit the player with an attempt. If it’s some crazy off balance heave from unreasonable distance, don’t count it as a shot unless it goes in and counts.

In the boys game varsity Tuesday, CJ freshman Brody Pant hit a shot from 3/4 court to end the third quarter that counted. Had he missed it, I wouldn’t not have counted it as a field goal attempt due to the distance on the shot.

Dead ball rebounds are just that, when neither team has an opportunity to secure the rebound.

That shot by Brody received almost no coverage that I saw. Just shows that no one pays attention to the CJ boys. Oh well. They will pay attention in 2 years.

The team keeps stats on the bench for in game adjustments. One of the assistant coaches rewatches the games on Hudl and then uploads the stats to Hudl and MaxPreps. I know that's how they've been doing it the last two years.
