Here we go, Friday night Big 8 showdown for all the conference marbles again. Both teams 8-0. CJ won the previous two years when each game came down to the final play. Lamar 4-time defending state champs. CJ has won 22 conference games in a row and is looking for their third consecutive undefeated league crown. Can Lamar get the one title that has eluded them during their impressive run?

I think CJ has too many offensive weapons and wins by maybe two touchdowns this year.

Lamar has been playing lights out on defense and has finally found their groove on offense. I think its another great game with lamar winning 38-35 on a last second field goal that doesnt get blocked this time

Yes I have to agree with card beat writer 600 more students plus the town of Carl Junction Has a larger population and a nice golf course sorry CJ wins this one!

CJ lists 84 players on their roster this year, including 20 seniors. Anyone have Lamar's numbers? Probably pretty similar if the past few years are any indication.

Guys I'm just joking I'm one of the few people on this board that think classification or school size in a lot of circumstances does not matter at all.

Mostly if you're talking class one to class 3 there's some teams in class one that can beat class 3 teams just as there's class 4 teams that can beat class 6 teams it's always been that way always will be. The reason for classification has more to do with state titles what they found is the larger schools would consistently field stronger teams even the great Webb City would struggle winning six titles in a row if they're were only 4 classes . matter of fact it would not happen!

Would like to see Lamar win just so we can keep the big 8 title home and not let CJ run off to the COC large with it. Lamar is a very good team but I think this years CJ team might be the best complete team they have had. I hope I am wrong but I think CJ wins by at least 2 TDs.

I think this will be a very good game.

Losing by two tds is not a very good game.

If CJ beats Lamar by 2 TD's or more as some are predicting I'll tip my hat to CJ. On paper CJ looks to be the better team, however that's why you play the game. It's been a few years since Lamar was the clear underdog, can't wait to see how that plays out. For me personally I would not lay down a bet on either team.

I think on paper if you were to go by comparing scores and how the games have gone by opponents it looks like CJ is a 2-3 TD favorite. The margin are pretty close but CJ has put away opponent early in every game except for maybe Monett. Lamar doesn't seem to be quite as dominant as the last few years which will mean little when they likely get their 5th straight state title in about 6-7 weeks but I do think CJ wins. Lamar will probably have some success controlling the ball so it will be close until late but I think CJ by 2 Tds.

I believe Lamar had a few linemen out early to mid season but are mostly full strength now.

I don't think Lamar can match CJ in the trenches. Lamar has the skill position players but, I think they will have a hard time finding any open holes. This could be the fastest team Lamar has ever had but, they just do not have the size they have had in the past. Win or lose, Lamar should be in the running for another Class 2 state championship.

I believe that CJ has their best overall team with several all conference linemen returning from last years team. Even though Schuerich graduated, they are better on offense this year. They are more balanced, with several players capable of having big games. I just don't know if CJ has improved enough to get by WP and WC in the districts.

Not necessarily. 2011 C4 Championship game: Scores had been swapped the entire contest. Game was tied at 42 late in the 4th quarter. Later, trailing 49 to 42, a Michael Sherer and Thomas Militello lead MICDS team was driving for their own TD and go ahead 2 pt conversion against WC (coach stated after the game that he had already made up his mind to go for the win if they scored). Webb finally forced a turnover on downs with less than a minute to play. Phoenix then breaks a long TD run on first down to put Webb up by the final margin of 14 (56 to 42). That was better than just a "good" game. I think all Cardinal fans and even MICDS and HS FB fans at large that watched that game would agree.

That was one of the most exciting HSFB games I have ever watched. MICDS' QB was on fire. He had one mis-thrown ball that whole game where he overthrew a wide open receiver for what would have been a TD. What a great game.

I see where a Lamar fan stated this might be their fastest team! That is saying a bunch considering four football players a few years ago ran to a state title in 4 x 100 meter in 42.5 which is smokin for a class 2 school. I'm doubting they have that kinda speed again but .......
CJ 49 LHS 42.

As they say in boxing, styles make fights. I can't see this one being a high scoring game if it is close unless it is CJ falling behind and coming back late. If Lamar has success moving the ball on the ground it will shorten the game and keep the score down. If CJ scores 49 they will win pretty easily. If the game is scored in the teens or low 20's it is advantage Lamar. My gut feeling is it splits the difference and it is something like 35-21 CJ but I think in the case of both teams it will be hands down the best teams each other has faced the whole year so we should learn a lot about both teams.

Yes, this is Lamar's fastest backfield yet. There were some track stars that played few years past, namely Beshore, but the whole backfield is loaded with speed now.

I'm not sure we have a real punishing runner to deal with CJ's size, although Embry has looked great as of late. Because of that I think best case (as someone previously noted) is to make it a grind. If we can keep the scores in the 20's I think Lamar has a real chance.

My only concern is whether it has been Monett, Mt Vernon, or even Aurora, teams have had success throwing on us. We've just been lucky enough that they haven't been loaded with weapons and their line has given out before we get exploited. I'm afraid CJ's line won't give out, and they are definitely loaded with weapons. If they get in a rhythm throwing on us I could see us being down a couple scores in a hurry. I'm going to throw out two predictions because I'm a total homer and want to at least keep a little hope

If Lamar wins: 28-21
If CJ wins: 21-35

Regardless of who wins, the anticipation leading up to this game is what makes high school football so exciting. David vs Goliath!! Two schools that have very good programs over the past few years, playing the final game of the regular season, with the conference title on the line. It doesn't get any better than this. If this game can come anywhere close to the past two games, even though the outcome wasn't what I wanted, we are all in for a treat. Good luck to both teams!! Hopefully both teams will come out of the game, injury free and be ready to make a run in their respective classes in the playoffs. It's too bad this rivalry has to end after this game.

Good luck to CJ next year and the coming years in the COC.

Great post!

Interesting story about the 2013 meeting. Sixth week of the season. Both teams undefeated with Lamar coming off of back-to-back state titles and CJ coming off a losing season. But Coach Buckmaster is on the scene (and to date since his arrival at CJ, for the current three seasons the Bulldogs have only lost to Webb City so far). Today’s Joplin Globe story recounts the now famous “hitch and pitch”, the 2013 game’s final play coming from 48 yards away and giving the Bulldogs a 50-46 victory. The Globe quotes Buckmaster, who shares that the team had never practiced the hitch and pitch, and in fact he told them about it during their final timeout with less than 10 seconds remaining. The play was a short drop back, quick pass of about 13 yards from QB Satterlee to WR McMurtey, who flips the ball back to RB Scheurich. Scheurich goes full speed to the edge and barely outruns Lamar defenders to the goal line as time expires.

Here’s an additional tidbit I’ll share based on what one of the CJ kids told me later that next week. The capacity crowd was loud during the timeout. Buck is trying to explain the play to his offense on the field, a group of 11 who are just about completely exhausted and gasping for air. The team moves back out to the field and huddles as the ref blows his whistle to start the play clock. As the huddle breaks, Scheurich turns to QB Satterlee and asks, “what am I supposed to do on this play?” Satterlee, surprised, exclaims back, “YOU ARE GETTING THE BALL AND SUPPOSED TO SCORE!”

Wow! As Buck said in the paper, he basically drew it up in the dirt. And how close it all came to never even happening, but by some great fortune for the Bulldogs.

The two teams have been close on paper and on the field for going on three seasons now. Each has had much to celebrate. Hats off to both programs, coaches, and players for their current successful runs. Can’t wait for Part III tomorrow night!

If Carl hopes to have any chance of beating Webb or advancing past district play this game with Lamar cannot be close. No way could Lamar stay within 3 TD's of Webb. Personally after watching both teams play I think CJ is deeper and more talented for the first time in three years of this meeting. I still have a hard time believing Lamar lost those first two meetings.

The week before this game in 2013, Lamar played a very weak Butler team. I think they scored something like 49 points in the 1st quarter and didn't have to put out much effort in winning 77-0. The following week, they were still in the Butler mode, and CJ came out and punched them in the mouth. Before Lamar knew what hit them, they were down 20-0 just barely into the 2nd quarter. Lamar started to claw back into it but still trailed 34-17 at the half. Lamar took the lead early in the 4th by a score of 38-37. Then it was back and forth with CJ taking a 43-38 lead with approximately 6 minutes to go in the game. Lamar then drove the length of the field and scored with about 1 minute left. CJ then started their drive with the famous hook and ladder as the game clinching play.

I still believe that Lamar was 2-3 touchdowns better than CJ that year but, with Beshore out with a sprained ankle, the game was as close as the final score indicates. I know a lot of people think that one player does not make that much difference and disagree with me, but Beshore was a difference maker on both sides of the ball. Just ask CJ what he did to them the year before. Over 200 yards rushing and 2 TD's, 3 interceptions and another score, and a kickoff return for another score. Would CJ have won if Schuerich was not able to play? Probably not!!

In my opinion, this year's CJ team is probably 2-3 TD's better. I guess we will find out tomorrow night. But, sometimes the ball bounces a little weird and strange things happen.

For Carl to even see Webb they will have a formidable task in my opinion beating West Plains. You are right, though, this game will tell a lot about them.

Agree 100% with you.

For CJ, not only is the conference title and third straight undefeated regular season up for grabs, but there is very slight hope of getting to host two district games to avoid traveling to West Plains.

According to my calculations, CJ and WP could wind up tied if CJ beats Lamar by 13 or more and WP blows it against 2-6 Rolla and loses by 13 or more (VERY doubtful). Not sure what the tiebreaker would be for two teams with the exact same district rating.

I don't know why everybody keeps forgetting CJ handled West Plains last year on the road. They return almost everybody so it's not like they forgot how to play and West Plains could improve that much more.

I think Beshore played defense in that 2013 game. also think he played a few offensive plays. will have to go back and watch film on the game.

You are correct Razor but I'd still watch the video if I were you . Still one of the best HS fb games I've ever watched in person.

Peterson had one heckuva a night for Lamar with Beshore out of the offensive lineup for most of the night. Generally I think he got Beshore's yardage and 46 was about the most Lamar was going to get. And CJ had luck on their side to get 50 instead of 43.

Beshore or not, I think CJ was good enough to go back and forth with the Tigers on that night.

(Btw the Bulldogs had some injured players in street clothes too - no excuses but it's all part of the history of that particular night and the on the field result)
