THE OZARKS
I'll be honest, I really think this could be the sleeper game of the week for the Ozarks, Ozark almost got Neosho last week and be a Carthage 28-14 who beat Webb by 2 TDs as well. I guess we'll see if I'm wrong tonight.

Ozark 21 - CJ 14 Hate to see CJ come into the Big COC and go 3-0.
Maybe just me.

What does that say about the BIG 8, WOW they play some great ball over there. Did C only win the Conference 1 time. and not out right?

CJ won the Big 8 conference outright in 2013 and 2014. They tied for a conference title in 2007. They had a couple good teams in the 90's I think but don't know how they fared in Conference.

Conference records since 2004 (All I could find on MaxPreps)

2004 5-2
2005 3-4
2006 1-6
2007 6-1 (Tied for Conference title with Monett & Cassville)
2008 6-1
2009 4-3
2010 1-6
2011 2-5
2012 3-4
2013 7-0
2014 8-0
2015 7-1

I am a Big 8 fan but to be fair CJ was not the caliber of team they are now until 2013 when they stole the title from Lamar on the last play. 2013 is when Lamar and CJ started separating from the rest of the conference. Monett and Aurora have fielded some good teams but have always seemed to be a step behind. Looking forward to the Lamar/Monett game this year, could be a good one.

My thoughts exactly. The traditional CJ is not even close to being half as good as the teams they've had the last few years. The only reason they didn't win the big 8 the last three years in a row was Lamar, the rest of the teams lost as you would have expected them to.

I debated on this one, at first I thought it could be a sleeper as well but I don't think this will be a problem for CJ. Ozark beat Carthage, but that was also week one and lots of teams were figuring things out. They "almost" beat Neosho, but I am not yet convinced that Neosho is the force I thought they might be this year.

Having said that, Ozark has so far been a surprise so anything is possible.

To brag on the Big 8 a bit, remember that this is a conference that boasts several 21st century state titles or championship game appearances. In addition to Lamar, both Cassville and Seneca have been there. Monett has made some nice runs too. Many years Aurora and Mt. Vernon have been hard to handle and of course years ago East Newton went all the way too.

Size? Since most of those schools are Class 3 and CJ is Class 4, there is not as big of a discrepancy as many think. Many years the rosters of these teams were similar or larger than CJ's.

So what happened in 2013 that seems to have made a difference? Well, that happens to have been the arrival of Coach Buckmaster. He wouldn't take credit for any win, but he deserves a ton of credit for turning these guys into winners.

The Big 8 seems to have two or three teams make deep runs every year. Cassville has 2 or 3 state titles, Lamar has 5, Monett played in the semis, Seneca played for a title, East Newton made the semis in 2007, and CJ runs into a great Webb team every year. This may be the best mid sized conference in the state

Take Lamar out of that conference and then check the state title count in the 21st century. 2 or 3 maybe? 4?

I heard the Southwest Conference used to win state titles every other year. Oh wait. That was just Webb City.

Chaotic, don't miss my point here. Take Webb and Lamar out of the equation and the whole southwest Missouri area has much fewer state titles. But of those, most would come from the Big 8. Zero I think from the OC and COC???

The Big 8 was plenty competitive for CJ. And the COC will be as well. But I'm enjoying the fact so far that CJ isn't turning out to be a pushover for the COC at this point, despite having quite a bit smaller enrollment.

Camdenton Class 4 State Champs in 04 or 05(had to beat Webb to get there I believe)
Waynesville Class 5 State Champs in 07

That is not to bad if you take Webb even out of the COC and they have no titles not sure what the Ozark conference has from founding members?

And as far as the founding members bit goes, Camdenton and Waynesville have both been in the Ozark Conference for at least 15 years. That's a little different than Webb transferring in a few years ago(5 years?) and now CJ

Here is how the Big 8 has fared in the last 10 years. Thanks to Webb, CJ is the only one to not make an appearance in at least the quarters.

06 - MV Quarters, Lamar Quarters
07 - EN Semis, MV Quarters
08 - Cassville Champs
09 - Cassville Champs, Lamar Semis
10 - Cassville Semis, Lamar Semis
11 - Lamar Champs, Cassville Quarters
12 - Lamar Champs, Monett Semis
13 - Lamar Champs, Seneca Runnerup
14 - Lamar Champs, Monett Semis
15 - Lamar Champs, Aurora Semis

Would love to see this compared to some of the NW and Central conferences. I would do it but don't know them well enough.

I did one more. Not super familiar with the KCI conference so no guarantees on accuracy.

I imagine CJDad2017 would strongly disagree with this take

Believe MV was in quarters in class 2 in 04 and 05 also.

Not convinced about Kearney. The defense is suspect. Their Achilles is the deep pass. They ran into a D1 level DT from Grandview that slowed them down. However, they wore him out in the 2H. We'll know more about Kearney after Liberty North. If they don't beat them by 14, then they will not beat Staley. They also have Platte County who they beat every year, but PC has a prolific passing attack.

Not sure PC matches well with Kearney.

Their passing attack only works if the Defense respects the run.

Past Platte County offenses relied to much on the pass with average to above average QBs.

With the exception of the Kelso kid and his predecessor about 4 years ago, just not seeing it after the Oak Park game.

Will go out on the broken limb and predict that 45 points will not get past K-Town's Defense from PC.

Nor will 55 from Staley, home or away.

Just like last year it is very hard at this stage to really know about the Dogs. I do agree, however, about the D at this still early point. It looks pretty pass vulnerable.

On another note you don't just up and replace what they had on D last year........

Platte County always has good skill position talent. The physicality on the lines hurts them vs. the major opponents. For Kearney to win weeks 8-9 they have to establish that physicality especially on offense. If someone asked me today about those games I'd say split (lose to Staley and beat PC).
