Car ownership gone by 2030?

I think this a great discussion, but I'm admittedly not extremely well versed on the particulars. Isn't 5G supposed to solve a lot of these issues once they make the strides to get there? Then, basically you'd have cell data that runs at near broadband speeds where you could then use your cellphone as a hotspot and never need to separate your internet service from your cell bill.
Well, someone else would have to address that. My non technical view is you'd have potential for dead spots still.

"Near broadband" may not also be a terribly relevant standard, either.

Ok. My tech skills have diminished tremendously, but I have driven into some very remote areas in the western part of the U.S. and my XM radio worked the entire time. How is this different from internet access? Dont insult me, just answer.
the data needs are much lower, one would think - XM is being broadcast from satellites that go one way

explain to me what happens when there are 5 million cars on the road at rush hour going 70 mph and someone hacks their onboard software and the cars all lose control in the mother of all car crashes. I can just imagine the lawsuits
That problem exists without driverless cars - what % of cars that are sold in 2017 are wifi enabled with computers controlling most of their key functions?

GM isn't sending me emails about my tire pressure and oil level by guessing.

And there's a reason auto insurers can give you the electronic plug in devices that can monitor how you are driving.

Maybe? But to have true high speed internet on long runs you need fiber, phones could be run on cheap copper and the party lines.
I think you have to think a lot about what the minimum mandate is, yeah, and there has to be some thought about what the 5 year and 10 year evolution looks like. You don't want to piss 100 B away.
