Repeating is one of the toughest things to do in sports. That is the task
that faces the Sikeston Bulldog team that not only earned the Class 4 title in
2011, but put their team among the best all time in Show-Me State history
completing the season with a 30-0 record.
With just one returning starter there will be a new mix for the opening tip,
however ten players return with varsity experience. "We plan on playing 10-11 players, much like last season",
stated head coach Gregg Holifield. "We are very comfortable
with our substitution patterns and feel we do not drop off much when we go to
our bench.
5-foot-9 inch senior guard Terry Jamison returns after
averaging 7.8 points per game and earning all-conference and all-district
honors. Joining Jamison in the starting lineup, 5-foot-10 inch junior guard
Vashawn Ruffin and 5-foot-11 inch guard Caleb McGee
return after combining for 10 points per game in the title season.
Rounding out the starting lineup, 6-foot-1 inch Kilron Coleman
and 6-foot-2 inch Keldon Warfield each rebound and averaged
around 5 points per game.
Sikeston will play to its strengths and will and will be outsized on most
nights. "We are a well-balanced team that can run the floor, handle and shoot the ball
pretty well", added Holifield. "We have good kids that work hard and have dedicated themselves to
being as good as they can be."
"I believe that we will be able to utilize our depth to put pressure on the ball
and play at a very high tempo. We feel that our depth is our #1 asset. I also
think we will able to really shoot the ball this year. We return 6 players that
played major roles on our team from last year. We also feel good about the 4
kids that are coming up from a 21-0 JV team last year."
Leading to state last year Sikeston was overlooked as other teams such as Borgia
and Soldan drew most of the attention. Even with the addition of many new
faces, teams know these Bulldogs will again be a force they must not overlook.
As Holifield and the Bulldogs find the right mix they will again be a March
threat to repeat.
