Here is my assessment. The defense has actually played pretty well both games. The offense is clearly where the problem is. They can move the ball but better blocking would be really helpful. Just can't ever seem to break loose. They can pass too - short passes have high completion rate but very little yardage, never anything after the catch. Longer passes are hit and miss - theyve made some great plays but also struggling to break coverage so a lot are broken up or intercepted. The biggest problem with the offense is that they are too frequently setting up their opponent to score instead of scoring themselves. Some teams in the past had the horsepower to overcome penalties and a few turnovers but this one does not so they absolutely must improve in this area if they want to salvage a decent season.
They have also fought terrible field position both games, often starting inside 15 or worse, where opponents are often getting the ball at 30 or better, sometimes MUCH better.
Also with this game it just seemed like one of those nights where so many things went against Carthage. I don't mean than in an 'it was unfair' way, just in a thats the way the cookie crumbles way. Weird goofy things out of their control like the clock operator failing to stop the clock multiple times, refs changing numerous calls, even the way the punts bounced. And the half seeming to be over then the refs put 1 sec back on the clock and Branson throws a hail mary and scores. But the real problem of course way too many of their own mistakes.
Looking forward, I no longer see a path for them to have a winning season. IF they clean up their offense they may still be able to hit 4-5. If they keep as-is they are going to be scratching for just a win period and may not find one.
