I figured with the All-State, POY and Miss Show-Me basketball announced this forum would be talking about the post season awards.

I've thought about this a little, and there is just no gracious way to complain about post season honors. You always sound whinny. In addition, nobody has seen every player on those teams, so it's hard to say that your local player is more deserving than a player you never saw play.

Since you asked, a girl at our local school averaged just over 30 points a game and was not named to the All State team. I just don't believe that there are 20 girls in Class 3 better than she is, but in fairness I have not seen most of them play or play more than once.

dtowner I totally get that. You are right because once you say maybe someone was deserving are you saying someone is not deserving. Nobody can see everyone so it is hard to compare one girl in SW vs a girl in NW. I spoke with our AD and he said these meeting about all-state and such can be heated and people often have to fight for their player. Stats are a nice way to compare but can't always be the end all be all. It is all subjective and this year above all others it has to be hard because we don't know who had to quarantine, who was missing each night. They are great things to debate. I never want to be negative about something they may or may not have deserved. I congratulate every all state player, COY and POY. I will say its hard but a player that averages 30 seems like a shoe in.

Competition you play against has to be a consideration. 30 points a game is easier come by in some places than it is in others.

All state is also tied to team success. You mentioned class 3. 17 of the 20 players were on a team that at least won their district. The Ramirez girl from Sarcoxie averaged 28-30 points a game but her team only won like 12 games. Plus they played a pretty weak schedule. Overall I thought they did a pretty good job.

It also seems which colleges are recruiting you plays a role. A kid going to an NAIA school has less of a chance.

I guess we could about Missouri Juco ball. This year the region teams played each other 3 times instead of 2 and Three Rivers women's team is one win away from an undefeated regular season for the first time. They host Crowder Wednesday to end the regular season. 3R is the 1 seed in the Region 16 Tournament and the higher seed gets to host the games throughout the tourney. This year the Region 16 winner gets an automatic bid to the NJCAA national Tournament so if the win out they will go. If they should get upset in the Region tourney they should have a good shot at an at large bid since they're currently ranked 10th in the nation.

Another consideration is how many players you have on your team, (not saying this is the case for the 30 PPG girl), but if your team only has 6 or 7 players that player may have the opportunity to stay on the floor for the whole game whether they are up or down big, while other teams that have more players that player may only play half the game.

You say that and I believe it's true. So if a team makes the final 4 and makes it through 2 teams that are ranked (not that the rankings matter so much but still) do you feel that that team should receive and all-state player?

It definitely seems to be pretty heavily weighted toward state tournament play, as maybe it should be. Whether right or wrong several teams had multiple girls on the all state team. I'm guessing this hurt a lot of the good players that play on weaker teams, even though they had a lot better stats and are probably the better players.

I've heard about those all state meetings and how they go. Definitely a "who's going to what college" award instead of best season/players in the state. I guess you have to make the post season too, which I disagree with. Plus different classes vote different ways. Ex: Smith from AV has been an obvious All-State player if you've watched her. But her team hasn't won districts. Forbes from NC a few years back had better stats, but didn't get a sniff at All-State. She was JUCO All-American and has been starting DI now.

I think this is another example of how they could integrate technology into the selection process. MBCA could create a form that all coaches could nominate, defend/explain, and vote on. At least regionally and then go from there. IMO all coaches, not just a few should be in on the selection process. They could decide as a region who the top players are and then go to an all-state vote with more than 1 "rep" for each region.

I'll just say this. Staley and Benton both made the final 4. Neither had an all-state player. Now for Benton I can say the stats are not there, only had 2 players average double digits. Benton is a defense first team. I'm not arguing that they should have got one per say But go back and look at the all staters they went through to get there. All these teams had one Maryville, Cameron, El Dorado, St Michael's, Macon and Central, Bolivar, St Pius they beat all but three and held their player down under their averages and some significantly Except Berry she went off. I'm sure I am seeing this through my Cardinal Red colored glasses. No axe to grind. It is a great honor and if everyone got to be that then it would be pointless. It makes for some debate if anything.

Different ways to look at it. I think team success should be a big factor. I will use the 2 Miller girls as an example. They averaged 14 and 15 points a game on a team that had 4 players averaging double figures. They played an extremely tough schedule. If either one of those girls were on a weaker team playing a weaker schedule and wanted to put up 25-30 points a night they could of easily.

Picking the all state or all-anything team is such an inexact science. There is a big disparity in the schedules teams play for one thing, and some teams have one really good player and the rest not so good, so that player has to put up some big stats. Those kind of teams are rarely very good though and they most often also play a weak schedule. When they play the good teams, the top player often gets shut down.

Then as mentioned above there are the teams that are really good and have several good players, but they don't individually put up the big numbers because of the multiple good players. Miller is a good example, so are teams like Kickapoo. Kickapoo still has and has had players go on to play college who did not put up gaudy numbers in high school. Same thing with Ozark, Nixa, and Republic. Regardless of stats, the college coaches know who can play for the most part, even if they don't put up big time stats or make the all state teams.

Not sure where you are from but the Nelson from Kingston deserved to be on the All-State team. Seeing her first hand and couple of the others first hand, she deserved it

I agree. She is a pure shooter that will be a great #2 guard in college. If she's on any of the other MAAA teams that have all state players, she makes all-state.

I never saw her play. I did see Kingston never beat a team with a winning record all year and got smoked by the few good teams they did play. They played probably the worst schedule I have ever seen for a class 3 school. Even if she is a great player is hard to justify putting her on the all state team playing bad team after bad team.

Lady Raiders completed their shortened version of the season undefeated with another nearly 30 point win over Crowder to end the regular season. They will host the winner of the Mineral Area - Jefferson College game next Thursday in the Region 16 Tourney semi finals.
