I think you could categorize them as a "great" defense. All time great? 85 Bears, 01 Ravens, 02 Buccaneers? Not necessarily, but there are a lot of different variables at play which could make them appear "good" instead of "great".

1. The Rams offense scored extremely fast. The defense was on the field a lot which is never great, but the defense still only gave up a hair over 15 points per game and only allowed more than 20 points 4 times that season (one in the season finale against the Eagles when starters were resting).

2. The Rams actually had an offense.
With respect to Refrigerator Perry, the 85 Bears, 01 Ravens, and the 03 Buccaneers, their defensive accomplishments stood out all the more because...well the Rams had more offensive talent in 1999 than these three had combined. When the defense HAS to be exceptional in order to win, it makes it all the more impressive. Having said that, the Rams weren't a team that HAD to outscore people. Holding a lot of teams under 14 helps a ton.
That '99 defense was really solid, definitely underrated. But after that they had a couple of defenses that could not hold up. The 01 team was still solid, but after that they were very average. It's one of those teams that had a great offense, but just didn't have defense to win games when the offense on the off chance couldn't.

To have Lamer Jackson on the list and not Drew Brees makes this poll completely embarrassing.
Not near as embassing to have him on the list as it is to have actually voted for him. Probably a 14 year old.

Marino could put a football in a receivers ear hole from 40 yards like a bullet, but in the second half of his career he always seemed to be making gestures that made it look like he was continually blaming his receivers when something went wrong. It was annoying.

Or chewing his offensive line.

I think most QBs are in the right place at the right time who have HOF careers. Takes a lot of stars to align.

My biggest thing with todays QBs are the lack of hits these guys take in comparison of what the older generation did. .

I’ve have often wondered how the books would read if Manning played for a better team? Archie that is, not Peyton. What if Archie played for the Steelers or the Cowboys and Bradshaw or Staubach we’re stuck with the sAints?

I always felt exactly the same way about Neil Lomax and Joe Montana. What if Lomax was playing for Bill Walsh and Montana was taken by St Louis. Would Montana be the one with the hip replacement and Lomax with SB rings?
