Kansas City, MO
Class 6
Lee's Summit West #5 v. Rockhurst #4 Could easily be a state championship game, and we are only in the second round. Surviving the bloodbath of Kansas City Classes 5 and 6 is not easy.

Class 4

Smithville #3 v. Platte County #5. Reality check time. Was Smithville's schedule enough to prepare them? I think not.

A lot of the higher ranked teams have mismatches again. Lots of blow outs coming for another week. At least there are a few gems.

I like the Webb v. Camdenton (in terms of football programs/history)...but nothing convinces me the Lakers are any better than Lafayette or Excelsior Springs in District 8. Thus, blowout time for Webb.

Lindburgh vs Kirkwood should be a pretty good match up. (Kirkwood is the defending state champs encase anyone form KC forgot)

Moberly vs Hannibal. Moberly won the first matchup but Hannibal has been playing better as of late.

Trust me everyone in KC is aware who won what last year. Class 6 over here is like survival training..............hopefully for us KC fans the title returns here but certainly going to be tough with CBC and these two among others coming down the line.

We know there are occasional champs from St. Louis, but the road to get there is much tougher on the West side of the state.

Some intriguing matchups in west central Missouri. Belton takes on #1 seed in their district - Smith-Cotton. It will be SC's first class 5 opponent of the season. In class one, Crest Ridge travels to Windsor marking the fourth consecutive year they've played twice in a season. Crest Ridge has won two of the three previous times they met in districts. This year is different in that Windsor hosts for the first time and bested the CougArs in week 9

Belton seemed like a stronger team last year. I was a little disappointed that they weren't better.

Lol occasional. That’s funny. It’s far more balanced than you KC folk believe. You had a nice run, but is over and it’s been over for a few years.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but why not.

Class 6 began in 2002.
Here are Large School titles since 2002:

Class 5

2002: St. Louis (Webster Groves)
2003: Kansas City (Park Hill)
2004: Kansas City (Ray-Pec)
2005: Kansas City (Ray-Pec)
2006: Kansas City (Ray-Pec)
2007: Other (Waynesville)
2008: St. Louis (Hazelwood East)
2009: St. Louis (Webster Groves)
2010: Kansas City (Lee's Summit West)
2011: Kansas City (Staley)
2012: St. Louis (Kirkwood)
2013: Kansas City (Lee's Summit West)
2014: Como/JC (Battle)
2015: Kansas City (Fort Osage)
2016: St. Louis (Vianney)

Class 6

2002: Kansas City (Rockhurst)
2003: Kansas City (Blue Springs)
2004: Como/JC (Hickman)
2005: St. Louis (DeSmet)
2006: Kansas City (Blue Springs South)
2007: Kansas City (Rockhurst)
2008: St. Louis (Hazelwood Central)
2009: St. Louis (Hazelwood Central)
2010: Kansas City (Rockhurst)
2011: Kansas City (Blue Springs South)
2012: Kansas City (Blue Springs)
2013: Kansas City (Blue Springs)
2014: St. Louis (CBC)
2015: Kansas City (Blue Springs South)
2016 St. Louis (Kirkwood)

BUT.......

In the last 10 years.....

Class 5

Kansas City: 4
St. Louis: 4
Como/JC: 1
Other: 1

Class 6

Kansas City: 6
St. Louis: 4

So in the last 10 years between Classes 5 & 6

Kansas City: 10
St. Louis: 8
Como/JC: 1
Other: 1

So KC has won 50% of the chamionships and St. Louis has won 40% since 2007

Wouldn't exactly call that occasional champs from STL.....

Go back a full 20 years. Add Class 4 and 5 to that list back to 1997.

98 RIverview Gardens and 99 Mehlville are the only teams from St. Louis from 97 to 2002 from St. Louis.

That makes 12 out of 40 possible. That is 30%. St. Louis has won an occasional championship. Three out of ten over the past 20 years.
And just for your edification, that word means: occurring, appearing, or done infrequently and irregularly. Example: St. Louis high schools have been occasional winners of state titles in football in the state of Missouri over the past twenty years. (We won't add in Class 3 or 4, because it would not even be occasional at that point.)

Thanks for playing.

The point was the tide is turning and the facts support that claim.

When sustained over a long enough sample size, I will believe...until then...SHOW ME. It is Missouri.

When sustained over a long enough sample size?

Well my facts came from the last 10 years? Is that not long enough?

Someone is living in the past, because their arguments are losing strength in the present.

Windsor has quietly had a very good season.

Didn't Windsor win 43-18 in 2015 in district. I think you were there.

Hey clownshow, YOU are the one trying to extend the timeline and add Classes.

And like I said, an eventual champion MAY occasionally come out of St. Louis, BUT they don't have to go through as much of a bloodbath to get there as teams from Kansas City,. Because KC has better teams. Get it?

Top 10 ranked teams (Class 5 and 6 only) for the past five years:

St. Louis: 16 teams (32%)
KC: 26 teams (52%)
Other: 8 teams (16%)

Since Kearney has won 29% of the last 14 State championships, does that qualify as more than occasionally?

The only thing that matters in this discussion is St. Louis is gaining in championships won in the top 2 classes, where StL and KC truly compete with each other. I'd say most would agree the depth in KC is greater, but at the top the gap has closed. This is a good thing BTW.

I went to Seneca to see Springfield Catholic play them in a playoff game in 1987. Things didn't end well for Catholic. Ugly. Great atmosphere down there in Seneca though. FIrst time i ever saw a Tomahawk chop. It was intimidating.
Ugly?? Seneca (87 Champs) had their hands full. It was the finesse, wide open aerial attack of SC vs the smash mouth ground and pound of Seneca led by Shannon Crouch. The two teams traded scores all game. Crouch, who almost never played defense, was finally sent in at safety in the 4th quarter. It has been 30 years now (can you believe it?) and I may get corrected, but if I remember, SC was driving late to tie the game, Seneca, got the stop and a late td to make it a 2 score victory. Great atmosphere for sure and a Great game! I'd like to see that game again but if there is a film remaining, it may be on Beta. LOL.

I was thinking it was a multiple overtime game.....but i'm getting old and should think less.

Not a clash of high ranked opponents but Willard/Nixa should be a good 2/3 matchup. Nixa won the regular season game in week 1. Willard has won their last three in a row while Nixa has lost their last four against good competition.

The East vs. West thing cracks me up. Like somehow you magically morph into a different being after you cross the COMO line.

There are a lot of factors that play into whether one area is better than the other. Demographics and layout of the land come to mind. STL has everything stacked against them with how the City/County is laid out. What I think you're starting to see is STL Private schools finally figuring out what Rockhurst got away with for many years.Busing situation also comes to mind.

Also its no surprise that you have the same schools competing every year.

02-03-09-15. 28.57% to be exact.
The last 14 years would be

2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003

that's the last 14 years by my counting, Kearney won in 2015, 2009, 2003

3/14= 21.42857% to be exact as you say

2002 to 2016 4/15

4/15 if you like...that's 27% TO BE EXACT. Why looky there, almost up to the rate of the occasional St. Louis champion in Class 5/6.

2002, 2003, 2009, 2015

I sort of agree. CBC, Vianney, DeSmet, Chaminade, John Burroughs, MICDS, Trinity, Lutheran North, etc ... the list is long but goes back decades. Did they learn from Rockhurst or was the Rock just one of many?

The biggest differences over the last several years between the sides of the state have not been in the biggest classes, IMO. It's been in Classes 3 and 4.

CBC won one championship in 2014
Vianney won one in 2016
Desmet won one in 2004
Chaminade zero won
Trinity zero won(only established in 2003)

MICDS, Burroughs and Luthern North all have had previous success in the smaller classes.

I will be out of the state, so won't be attending a game this week. Not all are teams that are serious title contenders, but these games at least have some intrigue:

Smithville @ PC
Rockhurst @ LSW
Lathrop @ Lexington
Westran @ Fayette
Clark County @ Macon
BSS @ Rock Bridge

Class 6
Ritenour at Hazelwood C
Kirkwood at Lindbergh

Class 5
Webster Groves at Pattonville - the regular season conference matchup between these two teams was cancelled due to fear following the Stockley verdict. Should be a really good game.
Neosho at Carthage - if for no other reason because I'll be there. Also, this seemed to be a more competitive game the first time they matched up 2 weeks ago.

Class 4
West Plains at CJ - will CJ "look past" this game to an almost inevitable matchup with WC?

Class 3
Rooting for Orchard Farm and Eldon.

Class 2
Rooting for Versailles and Macon.

Class 1
Portageville at Valle - I'm fired up after reading that article posted in the StL P-D about the storied Valle Catholic football program. I'd try to sneak a cow bell in there if I was going to the game! Or maybe hide behind a 150 year old tombstone and clang it after big plays. lol
