What is the best (worst) excuse you have had a player or parent give you for missing or wanting to sit out of a practice?

Mine is a tie between - "Mom makes us do chores and I hurt my back sweeping the kitchen floor" and "Coach I can do the warm-up and non-contact stuff but I can't hit for a couple days because if I do my new tattoo will leak ink."

I know you guys have some good ones.

I once gave the excuse that I was at the strip club all night with my boys watching our good looking teaching dance and getting drinks all while being an underage high school student athlete. Coach didn't take it to well.
Oh....and we were up late putting our "wangers" on the glass at the Alana Club.

Back in 2003 as an assistant, a kid came and told our head coach before August practice that he couldn’t go today because he “just ate a whopper”.

Our HC Just stared with a shocked look on his face. The kid dug deeper reacting to this response and said “well, it was a DOUBLE whopper!”

I forgot about one like that.......big OLman went to Applebee's about an hour before practice, ordered and ate the 2 for twenty couple meal (something like appetizer, 2 meals, and 2 desserts) by himself. Spent a ton of practice throwing up by the equipment shed.

We've got a running list of "best excuses" we started awhile back.

One of our general favorites was, "Saturday is my time."

It paled in comparison to what we felt garnered the #1 spot for awhile.
"My cat died." - kid missed THREE practices b/c his cat passed away!!!

But this has since been knocked to #2 on the list after last nights excuse.
I 'm not making this up, a kid missed an off season practice because, "I have to go to yoga with MY MOM"!!!!!

Depending on the attendees of the yoga class, that one might be acceptable.

this is not for missing, rather for being late, and not a great excuse but I loved our head coaches comment. LiL Johnny was late for practice for the 3rd day in a row. LiL Johnnies dad says to me, (dad) "Coach, Johhny is late but it is not his fault it is my fault as I got home late from work". (me) I understand sir but players and parents signed the paper about team rules, if you have a problem with that you should speak to the head coach. (Dad) "well can I talk to him". (Me) Coach Sm---, this man would like a word. (Coach S comes over) "can I help you" - the dad says the same thing, "it is not LiL Johnnies fault...." (Coach Sm--- says) "Sir, we run our reminders at noon on that line right over there, now it does not matter to me who is on that line at noon, you or LiL Johnny but one of you needs to be on that line at noon, have a good day sir." and trots back to his position group. I think about 10 other parents heard this. We did not receive one complaint about this. this happened about 20 years ago.

Not a football practice excuse...but TRUE STORY...I had a little First Grade girl come up to me before Elementary PE Class and sweetly say, "Sorry Coach...I don't have my tennis shoes today. My Mommy came home drunk last night and puked all over them. SORRY!

What do you say to a liitle girl that tells you that?

OK since you went there..... I had a second grade girl who was in a bad mood one day.
I asked her what was up. She said her dad got arrested again last night and her Halloween candy was in the back seat of his car.

Which is why. Too bad it's not that way now.

Lol. Idk why, but this one made me laugh really hard right in the middle of ISS. It's almost as if this lil gal was more torn up about the candy than dad. Too funny, and sad.

On the other end of the spectrum I worked with a young man named Chris Taylors father ,,,,Chris's senior year playoff game at Nixa there is a bone about ready to pop through the skin of a busted arm and Chris is telling them to tape the thing up cause he carries the ball in the other arm anyway.

Most annoying excuses: I cant squat or practice because I have a sunburn or poison ivy. I wrecked my 4-wheeler. My girlfriend has a softball game. My dad got Cardinals tickets. My uncle is in town and we are going out to eat .

had a kid miss a game because his dog had died earlier in the week. Family couldn't understand why he lost his starting position the next week...

Had a kid tell me he was out of town for his grandma's funeral....so when he got back I tried getting some more information. His conscience - I guess - got the best of him & he told me he actually missed for a boy scout camp, but didn't want anybody to know that because he thought he would get made fun of.....Lied about his Grandma D-Y-I-N-G in order to not get made fun of for being at a boy scout camp.....

Coach, I think that broke both legs last night! Because I KNOW that one ain't gonna keep me out of practice for long!

I have a great one but not really an excuse but something a player said to us after practice. Kid had been wearing shoulder pads without an undershirt. He walks into the coaches office with this rash and says, "Coach what is this?" Without hesitation our OL coach said "It's hair and eventually you'll have some on your balls too!" Kid walked out of the office in complete silence.
