I have both types of gun's self defense and hunting. My shotguns and deer rifles while adequate for self defense they are not optimal. . in my opinion.

And while as you stated the odds of being in a situation and needing protection is rather low the CDC data from 2013 commissioned by Pres. Obama stated that up to 2.5 million incidence of Defensive gun use happen a year.

I'd rather have a easy to use, accurate and reliable weapon designed for self defense if needed than wishing in hind sight I had that weapon if my family, Friends or myself was in need of it. But to each his own.

I will say this I only have two handguns...both open sighted. So you one up me in that area. And while I do carry them I don't always do so.
