The stipends go anywhere from 3-6k for an assistant and 4-10k for a head coach though some districts may have other incentives for coaches as well

I think its got to be closers to like 3.57 hr assuming an average of 5k for 25 hours a week
1. it is more like 30 hours a week added onto an already 40+ hours job.
Most jobs pay "time & a half" for anything over 40 hours. Rather than going from 1 to 1.5 coaching goes from 1 to .5.
2. Admin gets paid for "all of their time", coaches not so much.
3. Public Education is the worst paid profession in the USA. (that is a fact.
Then armchair QB's (armchair of everything) wonder why there are so few "really good ones" doing it.

I was doing it for the whole year the offseason usually has a little break in it plus the two dead weeks but ya I agree on the time and a half

I did not bother with counting: Off-Season, summer camps, summer weights.
Should I have added that 125 hours in too?

Not in Missouri. Labor of love. All the districts I have worked in coordinators make the same amount of money as position coaches. Explain that. Honestly I think fair pay should be 30,000 for Head, 15,000 for coordinators, 8,000 for assistants.

One thing I think that is also forgotten is the longer the season goes and the better job you do the less you technically get paid

The answer depends entirely on your situation.

Some coaches have exasperating teaching loads and other coaching responsibilities for very little pay.

Some have a very cushy "day job" at their school and are paid handsomely primarily just to coach football.

There's a vast difference between the two

Listen, I’m all for educators. My parents were educators. Many of my friends and extended family members are or were teachers.

Teachers are underpaid.

But if you think it’s the “worst paid profession in the USA” then you are delusional. There wasn’t any summer vacations, paid days of leave, two weeks for Christmas, spring break, Thanksgiving, Easter, Snow Days, Etc when I was in the military I’ll promise you that.

The US Military is overwhelmingly made up of, at any given moment, low level enlisted service members (E1-E4) on their first contract (first four years).

That means while you’re pouting about teachers making $40k/year and getting summers off, enlisted members are getting $1,785-$2500/month and working around the clock.

Sure. You could stay in longer, make it a career and eventually make more than that — if you live long enough, or have a family that is okay with you never being in their lives.

So no, it’s not the worst paid profession. AT ALL. NOT EVEN CLOSE.. I could name others. Average pay for Missouri Corrections Officer (Prison Guard) is $31K/year ... Go look up the pay of the local police force in your community.

Delusional - It is not my idea that it is the lowest paid profession. Google it, statistically it IS the lowest or one of the lowest. I am not one to make something up.
"These are the bottom ten -- taken from 827 college majors in 2021:1
  • Metalsmithing: $40,300
  • Medical Assisting: $44,800
  • Mental Health: $45,000
  • Early Childhood Education: $45,400
  • Outdoor Education: $46,300

I'm thinking by "professional", @runbillyrun meant worst paying "career the requires a 4 year degree"? But I am not disagreeing with you either.. although, at this point, I may take 2k/month (does that include room & board & meals?!?!) and enlist over dealing with any middle or high school kids these days.

They are paid a lot more fairly than coaches of any other sport...
Most district work off percentage of base salary and coaches are paid actually very equally. Which is a disadvantage to football. I got paid 400 dollars less to coach Track. I coached track 4 months. I work on football 12 months a year.

Elementary teachers should make the most of anyone in education. They are the most important in the entire process and they work their arses off.

If I were supreme commander of all schools in Missouri, my first move would be to set a salary limit on administrators based on cost of living in their communities. So $120,000 in rural areas and $150,000 near the big cities. There is no need for them to be paid what some of them make now unless elementary teachers are paid the same.

I don't know of any track coaches making 70-80k. I'm not saying football coaches are overpaid, but they are definitely paid much better than the baseball, basketball, volleyball coaches. I did baseball and basketball for 16 years. I would have loved to only have one game a week to prepare for, and 5-6 assistants to delegate some responsibilities on.

not counting the number of shoes they have to tie, the noses they wipe and the potty they have to clean up!

And how many baseball coaches show up everyday in the weight room during the summer for a 1k stipend? Or everyday before or after school for strength and conditioning? Also not to mention the time they put in preparing the workouts for the development of all athletes, not just football. Also, I've never coached baseball, but I imagine there is a little more preparing for a football game than a baseball game. I could be completely wrong.

Most schools go M-T for summer weights in June. 1k stipend? Does the 75k not include Summer weights? Some of these football coaches are getting 20-40 day extended contracts in the summer that ads up to a whole lot more then 1k. Most of the football coaches are weights teachers during the year, so yes they will be responsible for developing every athlete in their class. Not just the ones that play football. Other coaches day jobs are Lunchroom or locker room supervision. Football coaches have more time, and more resources for less games than any other sport. Not saying they shouldn't be paid, but they shouldn't be making 30,000 more than another head coach. It's got to the point where every football program goes almost 7 days a week for the coaching staff during the year. Is it working? There are still teams that go 0-10 every year. At the end of the day it comes down the kids you have. I don't care how much smoke some of these coaches try to blow up your butt about how much prep they put in. If you don't have the kids, you ain't winning.

I have never seen a 75,000 dollar football stipend in Missouri. You do realize that most of that salary is for teaching right? Prep for one football game and practice times are much longer than any other sport. And Football Has 5-6 games to prepare for a week. And to put it boldly for a lot of schools football is the only sport that actually makes money. Most other sports are money loosers.

Nobody said anything about 75000 stipend. That's a salary. Practices are not any longer. Prep time I would say is easier in football because of how many people are on staff to break up the work, and only playing 1 game a week. How does Football prepare for 5-6 games per week? Last I checked they only played on Friday night. I agree football is the best moneymaker for most schools, but its also the only sport that cost $1000+ per kid to get them suited up for a game. I'm all for coaches getting paid, but lets quit pretending football coaches time is worth more than any other coach.

I made $300 more dollars to coach football than track. I have no idea where you are getting that football coaches make 30k more than any other coach. I have no idea where you're from but in mid mo that's not happening. If you're comparing the coach that's been in education for 20+ years and is an AD or something like that to a coach that is right out of college, then yea there probably is that difference. But comparing a football coach of 20+ years to a baseball coach of 20+ years that have a similar teaching position, I would love for you to find 10 football coaches that make 30k more in that situation. You definitely sound like someone that is butt hurt because the football coach at your school probably got a bigger stipend than you. Also, most good coaches are going to be involved in their Freshman, Sophomore and JV teams. Include that with the varsity game and they may have 3-4 games a week. Not to mention if they have involvement in their Middle School programs. I'm all for all coaches getting paid more, but don't come on here acting like football coaches are the only ones paid decently.

And when you can retire at any age after 30 years of service in the long run its a pretty sweet deal being a coach/teacher in Mo. Not many jobs where you can draw retirement for more years than you worked

I never said it was a bad job. I was just referring to the post saying head football coaches make 30k more than other head coaches. I think teaching/coaching is a very rewarding and can be a fun career. But, yes the retirement is the main incentive teachers stay. If some politicians ever get their way and change it, then we will really have a teacher shortage.

Calling teaching a “sweet deal” is code for “I know Trump won!!!” My daughter makes $100,000 more per year than my wife and I, both educators with Masters degrees plus 30 hours made COMBINED in any year. What a “sweet deal” we had. Good grief.

Obviously your daughter chose a better career path than you did, worked hard and is being rewarded for it.

And I still say that working 30 years and drawing around 85% of your average salary for another 30 years is a pretty sweet deal.

I have never understood how educators have came to the conclusion that setting in a classroom for 2 years and getting a masters degree should get them more money. Out here in the real world doing your job better than everyone else gets you rewarded and better pay
