I know most of these are sports most colleges don't offer. But men's volleyball at Stanford(many Olympians from there) and WRESTLING! are freakin heartbreaking.

If the Stanfords of the world with their extremely deep pockets are making these decisions already, I can't imagine how bad it is going to get. College athletics was just a huge part of my life, I can't imagine it getting taken away in a blink like that.

I have a growing feeling this could become a college athletic apocalypse, and/or turn into a death nail for so many small colleges because so many of them rely on sports for enrollments and tuitions since they rarely give full rides.

I hope I'm wrong, but this doesn't seem to be going away soon.

Could see some FCS colleges fold their football programs this because of money. BIG 10 just canceled non-confrence games. Could see the other Power 5 following. The paydays these small programs gets for playing the big schools is a big chunk of their budgets.

To parents of high school senior football players. If football is really important to him and also to have an enjoyable high school senior experience I would suggest have them sit out of school this year. They can re-enroll for the school year 2021-2022. In the big scheme of things there is not that much difference between graduating at 19 versus 18.

Your crazy right. You got 4 years to play sports. If they are a senior and sit out they are done with sports.

Sit out the whole school year. Drop out of school for a year. It has been done before

Not in this state. The clock starts ticking at the beginning of your FR year and the alarm rings at 4.

MSHSAA age limits might not allow some to sit out

6. Age Limits
Grades 9-12

  • If you reach 19 years of age prior to July 1, you will be ineligible the next school year.
  • Over-aged 8th graders should be moved up to the senior high team to have eight semesters of eligibility.
  • Over-aged 6th graders should be moved up to the 7th grade team to participate, because they will be ineligible as seniors.

Most high school seniors are not 19 within 2 months of graduating. Therefore most students could drop out a year and still be eligible to play. If anyone thinks this is going to be a normal school year you are crazy.

Comeagle. Once your HS eligibility starts, you have 8 CONSECUTIVE SEMESTERS and that is it. No redshirt year.
Nuff said said enough. COVID will not change this.

It would not be 8 consecutive quarters. U would totally sit out a year. I know of a person who actually sat out their senior year due to injuries from a car crash would prohibit them from playing basketball. He dropped out of school for one year. The following year he came back to school and played his 4th year of basketball. It has been years since that took place. Maybe MHSAA changed the rules but if they didn’t it would be worth considering for some seniors.

Panther 72 you are correct. I just looked it up. They must have changed the rule. Feel bad for a lot of the players. I am afraid high school football may not happen this year. Hope I am wrong on that as well.

Any chance MSHSAA would change the rule for this year only, given the extenuating circumstances?

No they didn't do anything for spring sports. Once you start doing that it gets to be a slippery slope.

Agreed. You hate it for the kids, but that type of thing could snowball into major headaches real quick.

And still be eligible?
Wish I’d had this opportunity. Had a good Hs career, but I was 16 until 1/2way through my senior year.
Natural, I suppose, to imagine playing with two more years of lifting, maturity. Alas.
Yeah, if coach would’ve put me in, we would’ve won state. Wanna bet I can throw a football over those mountains?

Raw, knowing you not sure two more years would of helped

LOL.....just joking my friend, you would have been all State!!

I hope DII athletic programs can survive this. No tv money to hold them over. I've always thought KS and MO are the heart of DII in this country. The MIAA could be hurting real soon.
Many might not realize how many foreigners go to UCM, mostly Indian students, but there are a lot. The Wall Street Journal had them listed in an article in 2018. I believe they were in the top 15 in the entire country for foreign students. I can tell you one school that won't be doing online only. I'm not even sure India would let them back in the country; hopefully, they didn't leave in the spring, because they might have trouble getting back in the US as well. Truly nutty right now.
