how close can the defense be in a trapping situation? we used to teach stepping through. Is there a coaching box? Is it ever called?

It depends on the officials, everything depends on their opinion, not the letter of the rule.

Up here in north Missouri, some places still don't have proper coaches' boxes on their courts. And no, I NEVER see the bench conduct rule enforced.

As far as I know you can be as close as you want without fouling. The 5 second count is supposed to be in affect if the defender is within 6 feet of the ball handler but it is seldom counted that way. 6 feet is a long way from a kid dribbling or hold the ball and most officials just won't count unless the defender is in his grill. The coaches box rule should be enforced waay more than it is. If a gym doesn't have one they should make them fix that, it ain't that hard to do.
