Carthage HS is in need of an 8th team to fill out the 76th CHS Invitational. We had an Arkansas team (or so we thought) make a late drop.
The teams for this year include; Carthage, Ray-Pec, Ft. Smith Southside, Leavenworth (ks), Webb City, Joplin, and Nevada.
Please contact Coach Morris at morrisn@carthagetigers.org

This is a 1st Class Tournament.
Wonderful facility, good competition from different regions, and great hospitality as well.

Those football schools going to be competitive in basketball too? Will be interesting to see who fills that last spot.

Definitely all better at football. But still solid from a B-ball stand point.

The COC schools should be above .500 teams and be top half of the COC but still behind Nixa/Ozark etc..

Joplin(COC) has the best player in the field with the Wright kid, and good athletes around him. They won it last year and are probably favored.

Webb(COC) just reloads with talent/athletes every year, they will be deep again this year. And assuming the Washington kid is healthy, they will have the best athlete.

Carthage(COC) will miss the Pugh kid, but Templeman and Ray are a really good 1-2 guard duo, and they are obviously playing at home.

Nevada(Big8) Has won the tourney a couple times in recent years but were rebuilding last year 0-3, who knows if they will be back to competing this year or not. They are by far the smallest school in the field at class 4, with everyone else class 5-6/7Ark.

Ray-Pec(Suburban?) has the coaches son and his class that took their lumps as underclassmen but should be ready to step up and shine as Juniors/Seniors. Their style of play gives them a chance against anyone. Have been in the Title game 2 of last 3 years.

Don't know much about Leavenworth and Southside, Southside had a lot of speed last year but lacked size, there best player was a Junior. Leavenworth had a couple really good players but lacked depth their athletic big kid was a Sr. But their shooter was a Jr. They are large class schools that should have athletes regardless.

Whoever ends up filling the 8th spot will get 3 good games for their kids, a great venue for fans, first class hospitality for players, coaches and media. Should be fun to see who stands out from this early season Tourney.

Thanks for the info. Should be a solid tournament and yeah climbing the mountain in the COC is a load of a task.

The Washington kid tore his ACL. He will not be playing basketball this year.

Dang, hate to hear that, for the kid especially. Webb will still be solid, but that will definitely hurt.
Heard that Alex Martin (Cam Martin's younger brother) is back at Webb this year after being away for a year.

You're going about this the wrong way. In order to sell it to the OC and COC bottom feeders that don't have three tournaments on their schedule you need to promise you have at least one JV team, a homeschool team and three Class 2 teams.

You can have more than 3 tournaments now. You are allowed to have 26 games total I believe. You can technically play a tournament where you have a bye and only play 2 games, then schedule an extra regular season game. It is probably better now to have that bye in the first round instead of playing a JV team.

Hangman is right about that, having no restrictions on tourneys will help. At the least the teams that miss out on a game in the tourney will be able to pick up a game somewhere else on their schedule if they so choose.
Best bet is probably to try and get an "academy" or "prep" team that doesn't have some of the same restrictions on their schedule to be the 8th team.

This kind of makes sense as a late addition. I believe it is a team full of home schooled kids coached by the brother of the former Carthage coach Ray.

They won almost all their games last year on the home school circuit or whatever it is and most by a wide margin. They will be competitive as they have a couple kids that can really play and a decent supporting cast.

That is correct. RUSH will join as the 8th team. They are a homeschool team based in Nixa and are a well coached group of kids. They have a stud 6'6 JR post and a solid shooter at PG.

Webb City looks to have a lot of youth this year. Only 3 seniors listed on the roster and one of those may miss most, if not all year due to a football injury.

I saw the bracket posted on Twitter. Joplin opens up with the home school team Rush. That could be interesting especially since McDonald county beat Joplin the other night. Not sure what happened there, from what I was told McDonald county was the 3rd best team at the neosho jamboree behind Webb looking the best and neosho in between the 2.

All Wright had 30 but fouled out with 2 min to play. Joplin handed it over without him in the game. Guard for McDonald Co. had 25, they have a lot of solid players, impressed me with how the Joplin athleticism didn’t seem to bother them. MC is the early favorite in the Big 8 after that statement win.

Carthage Tourney Recap:

Joplin repeats as Champs. All Wright is a great Talent, if their bigs ever step up and make more of a contribution they can be really good. Wright would benefit from focusing more on the game and his teammates rather than constantly whining to/o out officials.

Carthage looked like the best team in the tourney for 11 Quarters, 4th quarter of the championship was a cold quarter for them and they struggled to make the big plays. They are going to be solid all year.

Ray-Pec has a nice point guard in Ashton Jermain and they are elite defensively. They lack the size and scoring punch to beat the better teams in KC though.

Webb has pieces, but they have some hot heads and bad attitudes that are going to have to come together if they are going to be as good as years past. Getting Roets back will make a big difference.

Leavenworth has a lot of athletes and are better than years past.

RUSH has two studs, the Graves kid is an old school post player who would be 1st team COC, (what school is missing out on having him?) and the Guard, Rudy, shot the lights out of it. As all Juniors and Seniors they are good now, but will be really tough next year.

Nevada got their first win in the 7th place game. They had a double digit lead and almost gave it away, figuring out how to win.

Southside sat their best player early in the 1st. Look to be trying to rebuild and change the culture. Coach Adams will get it turned around if given the time.

All Tournament Team Posted in a separate thread.
