Cardinals guaranteed to leave Milwaukee in 1st place. Might as well just keep adding to lead.

It was interesting to see that despite leading the division for five months, Milwaukee has only had two months with an above .500 record for the month

They got off to such a great start 20-7 I think, that it seems like they have been great all year, but actually they have been a below .500 team since that start. Cards made some great defensive plays tonight.

Cards have a -2 run differential. Minus 2! How is it even possible they're 14 games over .500, leading the division by 4 and only 2 games behind the best record in the NL?

And we think they've stunk most of the season!!

Go Cards.

When the Cards have lost, they have lost badly.

Can we give Matheny any credit yet or simply making the playoffs this year not good enough? Nobody agreed 100% Larussa's moves, in fact a lot of people complained about them. He still won. A lot of people complain about Matheny. This year is his best year in my opinion. Haters gonna hate.

I don't think it's "hating" to wonder why he would NOT pinch run for Molina when he was the game winning run on second base and 2 catchers in the dugout, or why he allowed Choate to face RH hitter when the bullpen is full help. That's what this board is for. Left the don't in my first sentence and just noticed.

There were a lot more LaRussa haters than Matheny. I don't think people hate Matheny at all. Seems like a level headed decent man. He certainly keeps his composure. The man literally makes 100s of decisions a day. When we disagree with two or three that is hardly hate. That's called being interested in your team and enjoying baseball discussion with other like minded fans.

Like LaRussa used to say, a manager is privy to more information than fans or media.
But that doesn't mean we can't question decisions. People like 3R who watch and pay
attention every day, who have strong opinions are the guys I want to talk baseball with.
What are we going to discuss, decisions we agree with???

i like Mike. He's a good guy. It's fun to criticize but he's doing a lot right. The Birds roster isn't exactly filled with high paid all-stars yet here they are again, in the thick of it down the stretch, with MM looking for his 3rd post season in as many tries. Not many managers can say that.

They have stunk most of the season! That's the exciting part. Finally getting some offense from a 3rd OF'er. Not to mention Holiday is at least producing a bit lately. Wong is better offensively of late as well. And Yadi is back. And Wacha is back, sort of. And Suckerson is finally out of the rotation...And I'm sure we all know, it could turn south in a heartbeat. This team is a fickle, fickle bunch.

No. He's an awful situational manager. Just awful.

What does he "manage" well? Why do you think he is good? Or why do you think it's his best year? Specifically...What do you think he does well?

I will say this...I gained a bit of respect for him after Wednesday's game...Had a buddy sitting down in the green seats right by the Birds dugout. If you watched the game, you remember the home plate ump yelling at the dugout that he'd heard enough (at least once that I can remember). Evidently there was some SERIOUS jawing going on between the dugouts during and after the plunking and missed plunking. Buddy could hear it all. Said Matheny was flat getting after it. And not very G rated. I didn't think he had that in him.

Eagles I think you under estimate MM. I still am dumbfounded by some of is decisions just like last night bringing Motte in such a high leverage situation, but he also stuck with Bourjos and Jay to start which won the game. Overall he is an effective leader and seems to be getting better every year as for his on field decision.

I kind of feel the same vb. Every manager makes decisions that you and I and Eagles and 3R and, of course Ducky, disagree with. I didn't agree with TLR all the time and he's a hall of fame manager. But MM's team has a 4 game lead in Sept and he's working on his 3rd post season trip in his first 3 years. He has to be doing something right......doesn't he??

I can't say having Bourjos in there won the game. He made a nice recovery after getting a terrible jump on the ball in center. The two catches Jay made were about as good as it gets. I still like Grichuk over Bourjos because of his overall play, fielding, throwing arm, speed and hitting.

Truthfully, I probably reside about where you guys do on him. Situationally he just baffles me at times. But Ducky is right, they are privy to much more info than we are as fans. And watching someone like Mattingly (who is winning his fair share of games) just absolutely butcher decision after decision during a game, it's really easy to find others that are much worse...I guess his "mistakes" are just easier for me to see because I watch nearly every pitch of every game...For the record, I put the quotes on mistakes because they're obviously not truly mistakes. But more moments where I, along with others on here, are left scratching our heads.

3r I am not saying that Bourjos is a great player, but I do think he gives us the best chance to win at this point. Grichuk strikes out too much and really hasn't hit that well. Right now I can live with either, but give a slight edge to Peter. I am glad the Oscar experiment seems to be over, OT has gotten some big pinch hits and that is a very positive thing going down the stretch!

Bourjos strikes out as much as anybody. Hope he keeps hitting but he is just plain dumb on the bases. I think Grichuk is about 8 for 20 since being called up so he has hit this time around.
