They were not the same team without Weston.
That is true, and he was a big part of my follow up point... CJ has been an incredible defensive football team for a few years. They will figure out how to be more efficient and score on offense but I’m not sure if they will stop people from gashing them on defense.
Helps a lot having a man taking up two boys positions on the dline. Anybody would have a better defense with a Wall on it...
It will be interesting to see if they ever go Baker at QB and Kennedy at RB.
That would be the best scenario for them here on out.
I thought this was a fairly interesting game. CJ looked better than I expected but was still severely outmatched. Joplin will probably eat CJ's lunch but they may compete with the rest. I didn't think Carthage looked quite as solid as they did against Nixa, made some silly mistakes, but they were also playing a tougher team. A few observations -
- CJ had a really nice crowd on hand, at least until the 4Q. Carthage side overflowing as well. Great atmosphere. Red shirts and blue shirts visiting with and hugging friends and family at halftime reminded me why I'm glad to have all these close communities playing these games now.
- CJ takes the prize for most annoying "first down" announcements...lol
- Carthage superintendent wearing a half bulldog half tiger shirt.
- The new facilities are pretty nice but why such tiny restrooms and concession area?
- Thought some of the Carthage strategy was kind of...odd late in the game.
- I don't often comment negatively about referees but they seemed unusually bad. Mostly against Carthage but then threw what seemed to be some make up flags against CJ in the closing stanza.
- Looked like Carthage players were dropping like flies after half time, I assume due to heat cramps. It was a hot soupy night for football. Lost 2 players on consecutive plays, one was laying on the ground during the entire play which lead to one of CJ's only score of the second half.
Yes--Baker had a great t-shirt! lol I told him if he wore too much Carthage gear--the CJ side of family was going to disown him! But I thought Carthage got away with some penalties. Right off the start refs missed facemask of Kennedy--it was quick, but it did turn his head--should've been 15 yards and a 1st down. After that and CJ not able to get TD--I knew how the rest of the game was going to be! CJ misses Weston on defense more than on offense. I thought it was a bad decision to leave Sappington in there too long--chance of injury. The crowds were really good and we visited with our Carthage family and friends afterward.
They missed Weston at the 1 yard line in the 1st Q but I generally agree.

And I'm pretty sure he's a redshirt Sophmore. They beat WEBB week one 2016 and he played outstanding with a bunch of tackles and a sack or two.

Who said anything about anyone named Chase? Only comment I made was about Zeke Wall! That's what my comment to Drill was. You go blah blah blah and ain't even up on the convo, i commented when whomever said "our D the past few years has been great" I said anybody's would be good with a Wall on the line.
