When i was in HS we didnt have to do anything to get ready for the season. The Steel Mines got us more than ready... It was tough work so we were in shape and then our lungs got some fresh air and we were good to go

My day was very much the same, but it was the Water Mines we worked, from sun up to sun down. Some people called them lakes as if they were pleasant places where people went to picnic, but those folks never lost a buddy to a dreaded water cave-in. They happened all the time. Having to hold our breaths for hours at a time helped get us ready for the upcoming water polo season though, but alas our horses were ill-prepared and ended up drowning by the dozens.

I believe the rule states, at the mandatory dead week before fall sports begin. But doesn't stop the winter and spring sports from holding morning workouts (practices) throughout the year. 20 days is probably correct, as coaches you feel if you are not using all 20 or 25 days you are not preparing the right way. As a kid who plays 3 sports, you want to please your coach, so you attend 60, or 75 days in order to stay in good graces. That is a lot of time and probably doesn't help in terms of over use injuries.

weights is not included in the day count, at least it isn't now, overuse could be a problem if you have a kid who is doing a lot of sports in the summer and is working out, i say there is some kids who may have to watch out for that, maybe at small schools where you have a kid who does everything,

what i want to know, because nothing has been said on here and i asked it a couple of months ago, is the state going to 90 min of contact rule , it was on the agenda

I don't know for 2016, but they sent out a blast a few weeks ago and defined a few terms. And full contact was described as full game like practice. Ex. Players being taken to the ground on tackles, full go contact. I'm not sure many teams practice like this much anymore. Every clinic I go to, coaches may use this type of practice in the pre-season, to see what they have, but when the season starts, everything usually goes to thud, which would not count as full contact. Coaches have been trying to make things safer for a long time, the associations are just now catching up with rules that cover their rears in the case of legal issues.

And you also probably had 5 offensive plays and 1 defensive scheme. The game has changed.

ha, have you not seen all the right moves, watch, so the 90 min thing is in play this year, if they are going to change stuff at the end of the school year they better get that out

I didnt play much offense. But i can guarantee you we had more than 1 defensive scheme. Our HC was a bit of a defensive genius and had different game plans all the time. One night he was sitting around with the asst. coach and came up with playing a 6-2 stack monster ALL NIGHT LONG... thats right, a goal line defense the entire game against a team that loved to run between the tackles. I had a big pick that night. Took it to the HOUSE!!!

You're right, stuff has changed, like the kids the days are softer... thats the biggest change.

What more do you need than 6-2 Stack Monster! (...if it works, you're a genius; and if not, what have you got to lose?)

Stopped Alexander cold except for a screen play or two.

You guys should have won that game. Coach Nickerson should have just had Rifleman take a safety and then punted it away.

That one call went a long way in changing a lot of kids lives. At least you got a chance to redeem yourself at Cal Poly. Poor Salvuchi went from having dreams of going to Penn State exchanged for time in the State Penn.

the penn boy should have used protection, coach nickerson should have held that golf club during the game as a lightening rod, always date a girl in the band

A person who runs one of those "elite" summer baseball leagues couldn't craft a better amendment to drive up their business. If this had ANYTHING to do with the demands being made on student athletes in the summer then weights/conditioning would be included.

Weights and Conditioning???? Without it kids would be getting injured left and right. They need the weights and conditioning to be ready. They don't need the repetitive motion that comes with playing the same sport over and over all year.

I don't disagree that kids need weights and conditioning, it just that the contact day limit is sold as a way to limit the demand on a student athlete's time, and without a limit on all functions the premise is false.

I'm glad we're going back to 20. For three sports kids in small schools, 25 per sport is too many days. It's a good thing, imo.

the 20 days is fine, what about the 90 min of contact a week, has that passed

I don't think the contact time has been legislated as of now. If I understand it correctly, at this point it is recommended, much like the heat acclimation was during its first year of existence. However, it's coming. The big thing in that proposal is the recommendation that you not have full contact in back to back days. That will be a game changer.

This is part of the blast sent out by MSHSAA about contact. I'm not sure many schools are doing back to back days of full contact anyways throughout the season. Don't think it will be much of a game changer. You can get some really good work in without going full contact by their definition.
Definitions

Full Contact: Defined as football drills or live game simulations where “live action” occurs. Live action, as defined by USA Football is contact at game speed where players execute full tackles at a competitive pace taking players to the ground.

When players are in half-shells, no thud/live action drills or simulations will occur. This rule is intended to limit live action drills and simulations, and not the number of practices, a team may participate in wearing full pads.

Air: Players run a drill unopposed without contact (Intensity: 0 on a scale of 0-4).

Bags: Drill is run against a bag or another soft-contact surface (Intensity: 1 on a scale of 0-4).

Control: Drill is run at assigned speed until the moment of contact; one player is pre-determined the “winner” by the coach. Contact remains above the waist and players stay on their feet (Intensity: 2 on a scale of 0-4).

Thud: Drill is run at competitive speed through the moment of contact; no pre-determined “winter.” Contact remains above the waist, players stay on their feet and a quick whistle ends the drill (Intensity: 3 on a scale of 0-4).

Live: Drill is run in game-like conditions and is the only time the players are taken to the ground (Intensity: 4 on a scale of 0-4).

it is a game changer, instead of live contact on tuesday and wednesday i will have to go monday, wednesday, what if kids have a jv game monday then can they have contact on tuesday, am i going to have jv kids not be able to have the same schedule as varsity
