Yet another very interesting week filled with very hard to figure games! Spent a lot of time on the Out of Region game settled on what should be a very good 2022 playoff rematch in SWMO. NEXT WEEK I have in and out of region doubleheaders currently slated (and could have added a third out of region that is how good next week potentially will be). That occurs rarely but will if I deem multiple games to be major showdowns (in and out of region). All picks are due by 7 PM FRIDAY. Good luck everyone enjoy the remainder of your Labor Day weekend!

Troy vs Hannibal

Troy didn't look too bad against O'Fallon Township and if not for 3 kickoff returns for touchdowns could have made the game a lot closer. Hannibal played a good Helias and then weak Jeff City Jays team and the scores were reflective of it. This will be Hannibal's last test before running through their conference schedule. Who do you have? I think Hannibal pulls it out because of Aneyas but it is closer than expected. If Aneyas doesn't play the entire game there's a real chance of upset. Hannibal 41- Troy 35

COC Week #3

Week 2 saw at least one minor to major surprise, depending on your viewpoint. Branson downs Carthage by a couple of TDs. Is Branson that improved? Is Carthage that bad? Little bit of both? And depending on your view of the transitive property, Joplin beats Willard by just that same couple TD margin, granted one was basically as time expired on Joplin's JV. Is Joplin just uninspired? Is Renfro being out that big of an issue. Is Willard competitive? REPMO flexed on Ozark a bit. Looked more like what others thought REPMO might look like in week #1 as well. Webb and Nixa did what most (if not all) thought they'd do in week 2.

Week 3 Matchups
  • Webb @ REPMO
  • Nixa @ Carthage
  • Ozark @ Joplin
  • Branson @ Willard
  • Neosho @ CJ
My thoughts...which aren't worth much
  • REPMO wins a close one in what I think is the game of the week. Webb's D giving up four scores to an extremely run heavy CJ last week seems worrisome. REPMO can run at will, dare I say on another level than CJ. And their passing attack is more than capable. O/U on this one could be about 87.5, and that might be conservative.
  • Nixa does what Nixa does and goes to Carthage and wins by 2+ scores.
  • Joplin's D is just too good to allow a young and inexperienced Ozark offense to get much done. Talent and athleticism will win out in this one.
  • This one will tell us a little on how much either team has improved. I think Branson wins by a couple scores.
  • Interesting matchup. Neosho's run D isn't great. CJ's pass D (or run D) isn't great. Neosho can pitch it around. CJ has a capable ground attack. Lots of points in this one too. Gimmie Neosho in a close one.
Some, at least on the surface, interesting matchups in week #3. The potential exists to have three or four closely contested games.

Big 8 Pick em week 3

In the Big 8 the West went 9-4 against the East in crossovers the last two weeks. This last week would have been a perfect week for the west had Monett not lost to the Neers 42-7.
The Newt jumped into the Win column with a 20-18 win over Hollister. I called this.
Seneca had a big 62-0 win over Catholic. Nevada downed Reeds 46-19, cAssville squeaked by Aurora 22-19,Mac downed Marshfield 34-14, and Lamar beat Log Rog 34-14.

This week starts conference play. We should see who is real and who still has work. Who thought the Newt would be .500

Lamar 2-0@Monett 0-2West Con
cAssville 2-0@Seneca 2-0West Con
Aurora 0-2@Mt Vernon 2-0East Con
Reeds 1-1@Catholic 0-2East Con
Marshfield 0-2@Hollister 0-2East con
Log Rog 1-1@Mac County 1-1Crossover
Nevada 2-0@The Newt 1-1West Con

My picks.
Monett, again going with my heart don't pick against my cubbies.
Seneca, while both teams are 2-0 I think Seneca will win big.
Mt Vernon takes the Bell bowl.
Reeds gets back to winning against Catholic
Marshfield in what I think will be a close game.
Mac County, in a game close game.
Nevada, goes to 3-0 just don't think the Newt will have enough to this week to put together a winning streak.

We have 4 who are still perfect. And several setting an 13-1.

SWMO players at the next level

Last year started working on a list of Southwest Missouri prep football players competing at the collegiate level with the intention of sharing it here and never finished it. This year, it took longer than I wanted due to the fact some junior colleges and NAIA schools are rather deliberate in posting official rosters. That said, here’s what I could find.

Disclaimer: I’m sure this list is far from complete and could be missing a player or two and I’m willing to update it in the event I omitted a student-athlete. Was able to scan rosters at most of the regional Division I schools (Missouri State, SEMO, Lindenwood, Arkansas State, Central Arkansas, UA-Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Southern Illinois, Western Illinois, the school located in the middle part of the state that I do not recognize, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, the school in Norman, Tulsa, etc.) Also checked South Dakota State, New Mexico State since there are connections to the region at those schools.

At Division II, checked rosters for schools in the MIAA, the GLVC and GAC.

At NAIA, checked rosters for schools in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, KCAC, the Sooner Athletic Conference and the North Star Athletic Conference.

At the NJCAA level, rosters of the Kansas Jayhawk Conference schools, three Iowa junior colleges and NEO A&M in Miami.

COC West (I did not check for Springfield members of the COC)
Joplin High School – 14 total (3 Division I, 7 Division II, 4 NAIA, 0 junior college)
Webb City – 13 total (3 Division I, 7 Division II, 3 NAIA, 0 junior college)
Carthage – 8 total (2 Division I, 4 Division II, 2 NAIA 0 junior college)
Neosho – 4 total (1 Division I, 1 Division II, 2 NAIA, 0 junior college)
Carl Junction – 3 total (0 Division I, 0 Division II, 3 NAIA, 0 junior college)

Big 8 (again did not look for all of the schools)
Mount Vernon – 6 total (0 Division I, 4 Division II, 2 NAIA, 0 junior college)
Cassville – 4 total (0 Division I, 3 Division II, 1 NAIA, 0 junior college)
Lamar – 3 total (0 Division I, 3 Division II, 0 NAIA, 0 junior college)
Nevada – 2 total (0 Division I, 1 Division II, 1 NAIA, 0 junior college)
Monett – 2 total (0 Division I, 2 Division II, 0 NAIA, 0 junior college)
McDonald County – 1 total (0 Division I, 0 Division II, 1 NAIA, 0 junior college)
Seneca – 1 total (0 Division I, 0 Division II, 1 NAIA, 0 junior college)

Also checked for schools like Liberal, Jasper, Lockwood, Stockton, Greenfield, Miller, Marionville, Pierce City and College Heights and did not find any. Please let me know if I missed one, or if you know a student-athlete competing in a program outside of the search area.

Largest enrollments (MSHSAA) without football

These are the top 30 schools that do not offer football and don't have soccer programs. I removed schools with soccer because schools of this size typically would struggle with # and are rarely competitive in both.

Ill do an 8-man version as well so some schools may be on both.
