Hey everyone,

I've been pondering the significance of runs earned in baseball lately, and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

We all know they're crucial for winning games, but how much weight should they carry in evaluating players or teams?

Are there other stats that overshadow the importance of runs earned?

And what about the quality of runs – does scoring early versus late in a game make a difference?

thanks in advance for any help

If a team gives up a lot of unearned runs, one of two things is probably true:
1. Their defense is bad.

2. Their pitching may be bad, but their ERAs are skewed down because of errors. For instance, a batter reaches on a two-out error, then the pitcher allows five runs that inning. All five runs are unearned, even though the last four may have been the pitcher's fault.
