interesting.

Anywhere you look in Youngstown are reminders of what’s been lost, including factories and jobs. The city’s population is down by almost two-thirds from the 1950s.

The economy wasn’t just disappearing here, so was a way of life.

“I realized that the core foundation of our country was slipping away,” said Rick Green, an ironworker:

Anna Para, a retired mother of four, said it got to the point where she didn’t like the direction that the country was headed.

The answer for many here was Donald Trump.

In 2016, according to the Mahoning County Board of Elections, approximately 7,000 registered Democrats switched parties to become Republicans.

“He is going to make America first, and he’s going to bring jobs back,” said Pastor Derrick Anderson.

“Donald Trump says you’re in lousy trade deals, we fix that, the jobs will come back,” Geno Difabio, a machine shop worker.

“Something that he said that really sticks with me is that he wants to give the power back to the American people, and that’s something that I can certainly get behind,” said Justis Harrison, a student.

The pastor, stay-at-home mother, student, machine shop worker and union member are all Democrats who were raised in Democratic families who crossed over to vote for Trump.

One year into his presidency, the group said he has been doing a good job.

“Better than I ever would have dreamt. I mean that, sincerely,” Para said.

“Yeah, he’s doing wonderful. He’s staying on task,” Anderson added.

The group said immigration is a huge issue, even in Youngstown.

“As far as I’m concerned, they’re stealing jobs of rightful citizens,” Green said.

It’s also about something else Trump voters say is important — rules and respect.

“I feel like when people come here illegally, that’s just very disrespectful. You don’t respect our laws, and you shouldn’t be able to come here freewheeling like that,” Harrison said.

A year later, all still want the wall.

As for the president’s inflammatory tweets and speech., Difabio said he used to cringe, but not anymore.

“I know what he’s done, and I’m starting to get an inkling of why he uses Twitter in the way he does, because if all he had to rely on is what people say about him, my God, I might not like the guy, and I love the guy, I love the job he’s doing,” he said.

Harrison met Trump at a rally and said he is not a racist.

“He was just the nicest person, and honestly, if he was a racist as everyone paints him out to be, he could have just walked right past me and not even said a word,” she said.

Difabio said he doesn’t believe that Trump is a liar, although he admits that he has fallen short of some of his goals.

Economically, the group says things are getting better — the stock market and their home values are up.

“Industries are booming,” Green said, admitting that this area isn’t seeing that “boom.”

“In this area, no, but in this area, I feel like there are small businesses that are starting to pick up,” he said.

Anderson said Trump’s tax reform will fuel the recovery.

“If you expand your business in the inner city, so then my community will benefit from this tax cut,” he said.

Group members said they all believed that the media hasn’t given Trump a fair shake.

One year later, they couldn’t be happier. They see achievement, and most of all, they see a president like them.

“He’s tenacious sometimes and says stuff off the cuff, like we do, like real Americans do,” Para said. “You know, we’re not perfect. I’m tired of suave. I’m tired of polished. I’m tired of the teleprompter. I am. I want my country back.”

So in order to get a brash person as president you vote for a corrupt, vile, uninformed reality star who uses the presidency to make a fortune for his family?
Thats just stupid.

These articles are interesting, but they need more of a focus on the most marginal voters versus people who pretty clearly are in the core 35% of support that Trump has if they are designed to be insightful into what will happen in 2018 and 2020. Yes, it is good to color in some "I switched to Trump and I still love him" voters, but that's not the only cohort out there.

It would be more interesting to talk people who voted for Barack Obama, Scott Walker and Donald Trump but just voted for the D (or stayed home) in that Wisconsin Senate special election. It would be more interesting to talk to hold your nose Trump voters in the suburbs of Cincinnati to see where they are. Not the "I really like Trump and his positions on trade and immigration are awesome" voters.

The path to a D President in 2020 is probably different than the path Obama had in 2008, just as Trump had a different one from GWB in 2000.

How do you figure he is using the office of the president to make a fortune???

The guy was already a billionaire. I have a feeling if you look at the net worth of the Obamas before and after they left the White House they used the office for personal gain more than the Trump family

I have to agree here but you can also look to the Clinton's the were worth way more after the presidency than before. If Clinton is never elected they are never worth what they are now. Many presidents have used the office to enrich themselves, especially after leaving.

He has spent 90+ days at Maralago or his other properties. His entire entourage, SS personnel, etc are paying premium prices for room, board, food, golf carts, SS personnel were renting space in Trump tower for a friggin fortune when Melania was staying there for months.

Many Foreign dignitaries visiting are staying at his properties. China gave Ivanka trademark approvals worth a fortune that they had denied the Trumps for years, once he became prez.

I could go on. How do you know he is a billionaire? Did you see his taxes or his personal balance sheet?

The game has definitely changed here. Being President is worth a lot of coin once you leave office. The difference with Trump is he figured out how to make money while still in office.

And most of them were Democrats......What does that tell you?
Hey bullit, I saw Trump bring Ivanka to the podium today to talk about the child tax credit. She says they doubled it, what tax change is it that has you saying it will cost your a lot more rather than getting a cut?

I have to agree, I would think congress could look at this and going forward could put some law that in that could curb this sort of thing that is going on with Trumps organization. Keep the president or congressmen business from being used while they hold office. Because it looks like in a few years we might have a field of billionaires running for president.

Yes the Child tax credit was doubled but my understanding it only applies to children under 16. I have two older than that. What is going to kill me is they got rid of the personal exemptions of $4050 for each dependent that is 5 kids plus we were able to claim both me and my wife. We meet with our tax guy at the end of this month and will no more.

It is a big incentive for 17 year olds to file separately with their own 12k standard deduction (subject to other considerations that apply here)

FAFSA has to matter here as well. It's not an area I have any insight into, but I'm sure some enterprising advisors and parents are on this.
yeah my wife signs up for that every year. Next year will be my oldest last year in College but I will also have two in College, three in daycare it will be interesting.

I don't know Neutron this is pretty telling I think, do I think he may have lost some support yeah, but if the economy keeps this up and business keep picking up he will be hard to beat. Here are some Videos to this conversation. I looked and some other areas have done the same thing and it seems his supporter still support him, but don't always agree on his style. That is what I would like to see in the polls, are people unhappy about his style and his tweets versus what he is trying to do. Now if in 4 years he did nothing about Nafta and a Dem comes and hits him hard on that I can see things changing.

Why didn't these people get out in special elections we've seen so far? Why are Rs scrambling to save a Trumpy seat in exurban/rural Western PA?

Focusing on true believers misses how the ground has moved in the last 12 months.

Well I have to go by what I have seen with people I know and talk to, my dad and his Union buddies still like Trump, but he and his UAW buddies would like to see Blunt gone, so what does that tell you? I don't think Trump is really a true Pub and for some reason whatever he is saying works on the old Blue dog democrats like my dad, who well really got tired of the party fighting more for people's right to use whatever potty they wanted versus worrying about what the common man actually worries about which is jobs and putting food on the table.

A lot of Trumps voters aren't Rs. Why would they be motivated to vote for a true R?
A lot of Rs aren't Trumpers. Those folks are pretty turned off right now too.

The point of the thread was that Trumps voters are not phased by the things you "civilized" voters keep screaming about. They actually enjoy the tweets, laugh at the Russia investigation, and are mad about the racism charges. If Trump maintains his voters and adds even a few with a great economy, he will win easily.
I can't think of anyone on here who voted Trump that wouldn't again but can think of a couple who didn't that would or might this time.

They might not be laughing about Russia too much longer.

Ok I gotcha, hope it works out for ya. I assume the new standard deduction will be good for me. No kids at home, just me and my wife and she is still working. A 24k deduction will wipe out most of her income on our taxes.

Party ID moves over time. Rs who aren't Trumpers who vote D can become Ds. Same with people who became R for Trump.

There's also the matter of turnout. Ds have been turning out better. Black Ds turned out horribly in 2016, though.

We have a lot of elections that have happened since Nov. 2016. They show a change in the voting and turnout pattern of some electorates.

Yeah, that has been the mantra for a year now.
New stuff just keeps bubbling up, not including a couple of indictments a couple of guilty pleas. You brush those off when you don't even know what those that are cooperating with Mueller have told him.

Are you gonna be saying "just around the corner" 5 years from now? When do you finally admit how foolish you look clinging to this Russia stole the election thing?

You are still being conned.
These people are so intertwined with
Russian organized crime they use vodka for mouthwash.

If you're talking to me I have NEVER said they stole the election, nor has any rational people. The issue is they DID interfere and the question is did they have help from anyone in this country. YOU try to make it about 'winning or losing' when that has nothing to do with real issue.
