Wonder how TCU beat michigan?

Everyone should operate under the assumption that everyone else is trying to steal your signs. Sign-stealing is the rule, not the exception. Surely everyone who signals disguises their signals in some way. You should expect it to happen and take steps to mitigate it, otherwise it's on you.
They clearly sent this guy to stadiums to scout on game days. Anyone who believes he did it on his own is either naive or a Michigan fan.

That is against the rules.

I understand that. I'm not defending their breaking of the rules. The rules are the rules (unless we're looking at an earlier thread). I'm just wondering what if they had cracked the code watching publicly available game broadcasts? Or on the sideline during their game? What's the actual difference?

Because in person is prohibited.

This isn't a charity volleyball game. How many millions more did Michigan (and the b1g) make due to them cheating their way to a playoff spot?

Well according to the article TCU wasn’t even a team they scouted. This has to be the dumbest thing of all time.

Might be a business for fans to record sidelines and sell their video to the teams opponent. One could catch some good games that way.

According to the report, the Horned Frogs staff used "dummy signals" in the team's stunning 51-45 upset win over the Wolverines after they were tipped off to suspicious activity from the Michigan coaching staff.

I know it's prohibited. I am asking what's the real definable actual difference?

Definable is easy.

Don't go to the games and scout them.

take whats on video and use it all you want.

The reason Michigan was 'upset' by TCU is they didn't have their cheating crutch.

Probably also the same reason they beat tOSU.

It's easy to have a great defense if you know what the other team is running.

I understand that it is against the rules. I'm not questioning that in any way. I am asking the philosophical question: what is the actual difference in principle?

You can see everything and can specifically target the signal people in person.

If you watch video/TV that isn't always the case.

That's how I see it anyways.
