Seeing all this rain reminds me of a High School game I coached in my younger years in PA. I spent all week to prepare a special defense to shut down the opponent's monster run game, the 6-2 stack monster. It was a very rainy night, we shut down their run game, and after my corner made an honest mistake and went for the man and not the ball, drawing a pi penalty we got a goalie stop and got the ball back for the one up by 3-4 points. Well our ballcarrier holding onto a wet ball lost the ball and the other school fell on it for a touchdown.

Now upon retirement from high school, college and the NFL, some even consider me to have considered acting, I consider myself in a position as coaches mentor and passing on my wisdom to the next generation of coaches.

Make sure you go over ball security with your skill guys tonight, make sure they double skin the ball at all times. If you are in the same situation you may consider taking a safety as I so often heard about from local experts after that critical loss, and thought about while I was picking up trash out of my yard.

Hoping every COACH has kids play with ALL THE RIGHT MOVES tonight. Maybe someday you will have a documentary within your program. Any case, do it TOGETHER.

We need to have a year end "awards" thread. If/when we do I nominate this for "post of the year"!

Coach Nickerson, you still got it my man!! This made my day!!!! Doc Guys, TOGETHER!!!!!

Speaking of choosing to take a safety....

I had a kid playing in a game where Webb City was, as usual, having their way with us. The score was perhaps 35-0 at the time and my kid was punting and couldn't snag a high snap that went over his head and back to near the goal line. As he scooped it up, he barely gets back out to the two. Webb scores on the next play.

The head coach scolded the kid - why didn't you take a safety?!?!

The kid replied, "they only scored 7 coach. If I'd taken a safety, they'd have gotten 9 more points out of it because we haven't stopped them all night."
