As a retired coach with over 30 years experience of being a head coach at every level and a national championship at Minnesota State in the 90's, I feel that it is important for me to offer wisdom to the next generation. I want to help every COACH that I can. Since my wisdom on Ball Security last Friday was so well taken and I didn't notice a lot of turnovers, I am guessing it was well received and would like to pass on more wisdom on Fridays.
Tonight with dryer conditions, my guess is the air will be filled with footballs with passing games getting going again tonight. To all you Defensive Back Coaches/Defensive Backfield Coaches. Make sure your Corners, rather you are playing the 6-2 stack monster or you are playing whatever, make sure your corners play the ball, and not the man. When you play the ball, you can get a pick 6, or make a clean play. If you play the man you have a chance of pi penalties, or missing the man and he may score.
Back in the 80's I was a Head Coach at a small steel mill town in Pennsylvania, before getting my chance to jump to college as an assistant. We were playing a big school in a big game on a rainy night if my memory serves right. We were playing a school that had a separate boys and girls tennis team, thats how big they were, they had their own pool if I remember right. Well I knew we had to take away their running game and stud back to have a chance, and worked all week perfecting the famous 6-2 stack monster, defend the pass and contain with the corners, everyone else take out the run ( we had a GREAT mike Backer- wish he would have gone on to USC- another story). I knew they would have to pass and knew our corners could have a big role. We had a great, smart corner- #33 who was 5-10, wanted to trade playing college ball for an education to be an engineer and be able to walk when he was 40. He was a smart kid, a little too smart for his own good at times. I preached to him all week ( with my 9 iron) to go for the ball, not the man.
During the game, the 6-2 Stack Monster caught WH off guard- kids executed it. WH tried to throw it and Stef even had a pick 6. Well crunch time he forgot or something and played the man on 3rd and long and got a PI Penalty like I told him would happen. To make a long story short - Coaches- make sure your D-backs play the ball and not the man tonight. You won't have to worry about a fumble in the end zone, won't have your trash thrown on your lawn.
Hoping that every COACH has kids play with ALL THE RIGHT MOVES tonight. Maybe some day you will have a documentary about your program. Any case, whatever you guys do, DO IT TOGETHER. TOGETHER.
Any case, I pray that no coach through his moves experiences a house where his daughter keeps seeing things and thinking THEY'RE BACK that forces him through an identity change.
Go for the Ball, Not the Man.
