It was a back-and-forth game in the first quarter, but then Carthage shot lights out to start the second quarter. Downing came off the bench when Smith got in foul trouble and hit treys on 3 straight possessions. Carthage poured in 20 points in the first 4 minutes of the 2nd quarter to go up by 20 before a mostly scoreless 2nd half of the quarter. Willard had cut the lead down to 12-14 points before getting called for a player control foul late in the 3rd. The Willard coach came out to the free throw line to contest the call and was assessed a technical foul. Then, a Willard player was assessed a technical foul about 30 seconds later. The coach kept arguing with the official and received a second technical foul. O'Malley hit 4 of 6 free throws and Carthage scored again with possession to go back up by 20 and Willard never caught up.
