Why the name Licking Summer Camps? [/URL]
I wish I had a dollar for every time over the past few summers I have
been asked this question.
In the early years, starting in 1993, we hosted all of our camps at the
Sherman Hill Field House in Licking, MO. By 1998, we had grown to the point
that we were playing past midnight, so we expanded out to use gyms in Houston
and Salem.
A major logistics problem in those early days was trying to find enough
beds in the Licking, MO vicinity for a camp that, by 1998, was hosting over 150
teams. Despite using every motel between Salem and Mountain Grove, I would
still have 30 to 40 girls and their coaches sleeping on my rec room floor every
Friday night of a camp weekend.
In 2000, we expanded further by using facilities in Rolla, MO. In 2001,
we held our first camp entirely in Rolla. By 2005 it was obvious, for many
reasons, that holding camps in Licking was no longer in the best interest of
our future growth, and we have not held camps there since. That same year we
held a basketball camp in Arnold, MO, the first step in an expansion that now
includes nineteen camps in six locations around the Midwest.
The first year, 2006, that we were no longer affiliated with the
community of Licking, we changed our name to Route 66 Shootout. Nobody knew who
we were and no one wanted to buy any of our attire with Route 66 on it. "Where
is the Licking stuff," I was asked all summer.
I learned a valuable marketing lesson; it is all in the name, and
Licking is a name hard to forget. The next year, we changed the camp name back
to Licking Summer Camps. I now have a trademark on the name, so if anyone in
Licking ever wants to start their own camps, they are going to have to come up
with another name.
In a less family setting, I would share with you some great anecdotes
about humorous, off color stories gathered over the years in regard to the name
"Licking Summer Camp." Turn off the safe mode on your computer, then Google
"Licking Summer Camps" and see what pops up.
I estimate that, over the years, we have given away over 270,000
Licking Summer Camp tee-shirts. They are everywhere in St. Louis, where I now
live. I have seen our tee-shirts in states as far away as California and have
had acquaintances report spotting them in Europe. If you mention "Licking, MO"
to any female resident of the state under the age of 40 (and she doesn't slap
you), the odds are good she will respond, "I went to camp there in high
school."
Twenty one years makes a Summer Tradition. I invite you to join us for
the 2014 Licking Summer Camps. Visit our website: www.lickingcamps.com or give me a call. We will get you
set up.
