Why have leagues and conferences today?

Play a 10 game regular season. Schedule whoever you want in the first 3 weeks (historic rivalry games not in your classification). Week 4-10 will be District games within your classification. There will be eight/eight team districts. The top (4) teams in each District advance to the state playoffs. Only head to head District game records count towards District seeding for playoffs. The playoffs will consist of (5) rounds. Regionals, Sectionals, Quarterfinal, Semifinal, Championship. The Regional round will be cross bracketed.

This is basically what Georgia does. The difference is in sectionals. Sectionals would be winner of game 1 vs. Game 4. Also winner of game 2 vs game 3. That way the top 2 seeds from the same district would not meet till the quarterfinal. The two things that were tough about the regular season was: 1. For those schools near the cut line that may jump up and down between classes, it was tough having a completely different schedule every couple of years ... And yes that did actually happen. 2. As others have stated ... The travel for some schools like Joplin, Carthage, and Kickapoo. And it affected all sports, since there were no conferences.

Conference play seems to work well for Lamar. Even though Lamar won their 4th state title before they won their first conference title . District play averages 105 miles to each school for them.

Joplin could always go back to 2 high schools. Parkwood resurrection! ;)

That doesn't solve the problem for Carthage though. Too small to build two high schools, but large enough to be in the largest class in all sports save for football. Still, I like the idea of state sanctioned conferences better.

This format would work for Class 5. 11 game round robin with a bye week (may schedule 11th nonconference game during bye week)

I was looking for an explanation of why Texas kids can play with college rules but Missouri kids are some how unable too
