I assume it is because they would lose all of the independents who love over priced mediocre coffee.

Depends on who the other candidates are. If it's Trump, Shultz, and any of the extremists running (most of the Dem field) for the Dems, Shults looks like a way to vote for a sane but more traditional Dem.
