Who do you guys have?

I'm not much of a class 1 historian, but would love to hear what people have to say..I'm sure we could hear some SCC, Jefferson, Advance, who else? What years? Why were they so dominant

Well you have to start with Puxico and Coach Arnold Ryan.

Then you next look at Bradleyville and the so called Hicks from the Sticks. One could probably argue based on the record winning streak that they were overall the best. But pretty hard to compare teams like this.

Then as you mention Scott County Central and other’s.

The 2008-2009 Scott County Central team is one of the best teams I’ve ever seen. They beat my cousins Newtown Harris team by 30+ pts in the state title game. And the Newtown team was something special. That SCC team had Otto Porter, Bobby Hatchett and Drew Thomas.

.......Any discussion about class 1 bb would have to include Scott County Central...with 17 state championships and many undefeated teams with Ronnie Cookson on the side lines... The year, take yer pick... Total domination..!

Did not see the 2008-09 team, but saw the next couple of years. Doubt there have been many Class 1 teams that would have even hung with them.

That 2009 team was definitely one of the most talented Class 1 teams ever. That was the year they played Sikeston for the first time in nearly 40 years. They set it up at the Show Me Center and it sold out in 24 hours. 7,200 in attendance and another 15,000 webcasts were tuned in to watch. Sikeston won the game 86-85 in one of the all-time classic games in SEMO history and also Missouri high school history. Of course with a little controversy on the finish as well, just to add to the lore. And also family vs. family, Otto Porter vs. Michael Porter. Bobby Hatchett was a cousin whose uncle Allen Hatchett was an all-state player at Sikeston in the 90s and his father an all-state player at SCC in the 90s. So many storylines. I think rivals did a big feature article on it and the game lived up to the hype. Now it is simply known as "The Game" down in this neck of the woods.

Man that sounds like a great game. The team they beat in the finals wasn’t a bad team. Without SCC they would’ve beaten anyone in the title game. They lost in the Quarterfinals the previous 3 years against Jefferson. They beat Jefferson and Mound City to get there. Those Newtown Harris boys were one of the best teams I’ve seen as well. Bucket Lover did you see that state title game in 09?

Yes I saw the championship game against Newtown Harris. Nice team, but just totally outmatched against the talent of SCC.

Yes it was one of the greatest games ever. Consider that SCC is a Class 1 school that went toe to toe with a Class 4 quarterfinalist Sikeston. Just came up one point short. It shows that SCC could have competed against much larger teams. Maybe not won it all, but certainly capable of competing against the larger schools.

I am not sure of the year but SCC had a team that I think beat all the class champions sometime during the year.

In 1980, class 2A SCC won the Christmas tournament at Cape.....I'm not sure if they beat both teams, but 3A champ Charleston and 4A champ Cape Central were both in the tornament.....That SCC team pounded Joe Kleine's Slater team by 42 in the finals.

From '88 to '91, Marcus Timmons led SCC to 4 titles and a record of 130-3.

Marcus is right on as usual. SCC didn't play Charleston in the tournament. Charleston was beaten by Cape in the Semis and then again by Clearwater for 3rd place. Clearwater had given SCC a run for it in the Semis but came up short. SCC then beat Cape in the finals. I don't know for sure but I'd bet it was the only time 3 state champions played in the same tournament in the regular season. If I remember right Charleston went on to win class 3 handily. I can't quite remember about Cape. But there was little doubt who the best team in the state was that year.

Was that when Clearwater was putting up those gaudy scoring totals, running their offense through Joe Cravens? Seems I recall seeing them whip PB and he was playing the high post in their offense at maybe 5'7"? Does that sound right?

Yes on the scoring but Joe wasn't until the next year. 1980 was the year Clearwater went for 166 in a game along with a few others over 100. They averaged 86 if I remember right and no one player was over 18 or so. They gave SCC one of their toughest games of the year. Unfortunately they tailed off at the end of the year and could't get out of their district for a rematch with Charleston.

They lost most of their scoring the next year but Joe picked up a lot of it. I think he only had one or two games under 20 all year. And he never set foot in the lane except for fast break layups. That post player stuff was all a put on by coach Larry Morgan. Lol. But he could shoot it from anywhere. We're talking Danny Foster like. He just wasn't 6'5". He mostly ran the baseline and fired from the corners. Here's one to test your memory. They played Portageville, I believe it was, at PB before a 3R game. Joe had gotten a lot of pub in the paper. A big crowd was there to see this 5'7" post player who was leading Semo in scoring. He promptly went zero for the first half and impressed no one. His first shot of the second half was from deep it a corner and grazed the side of the backboard before going in. That lit the fire and he poured in 37 for the 2nd half only missing a couple of times and Clearwater won the game. He had lived up to his rep and them some. Lol.

It was certainly a different time for basketball.

Thanks for the clarification.... Was Sam Holmes on that 1980 team? I knew him at SEMO and also roomed next door to his brother in Towers.....

Marcus touched on it, but yes the 1980 SCC could make that claim. SCC in 2009 that beat Newtown Harris was very good, but not good enough to win all classes. Sikeston of course beat them and then Borgia beat Sikeston. Both Class 4. And you know the St. Louis privates with Bradley Beal, etc. would have something to say about it lol

Totally different era from the Scott County Central's of today, but New Haven won 4 straight state titles from 1956 to 1959. That's when there were only 3 classes - small, medium and large. Since then they have won 4 state titles.
