Well, being in southeast Missouri, maybe you don't get it, but A LOT of people were unhappy if not outright embarrassed by the small, red neck, hick, cow town, regional sounding Southwest Missouri State. All of our neighbor states like Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Arkansas all have 'State' schools in addition to the main state schools. Not to compare those to Okie State or Michigan State or Iowa State, etc. because they were long ago established as the main secondary school in their respective states. "accurate name for where the school is located" - Then, MU should be Central-Missouri, right? "What if SEMO also wanted to be called Mo. St. how would you decide who got that name?" - I think MSU had presented itself over a number of years as the second top school in the state and had earned the right to be called Missouri State University. No disrespect to SEMO or Central-MO.
