Supposedly will announce the Saturday morning after jamborees so August 18.

Yep; just looked it up in MSHSAA manual which it says fall sports districts will be released August 17. Knew I had heard it was around jamboree time.

Why so late on class/district assignments this year?

Theory was to wait and make sure everyone that says they have teams actually field a team so all the class 1 districts have 8 teams.

The announcement is for all sports and activities, not just football. Some really small schools may or may not be able to field a softball team, for example.
