I just heard this morning, the opening game of the baseball season has already been played even though all the other teams are still in spring training. And it was in Japan.

Are you kidding me? Even into my 40s I used to get excited anticipating the opening day of the season. Now we have reached a point where I heard about it the next day.

It was pretty widely known for a while. It's why Ichiro was signed by Seattle again

First I heard of it too.
Same here. I recently saw a Facebook post of Seattle playing overseas and Ichiro making a throw either to 3B or home (can’t remember for sure which). I didn’t realize that was something more than an exhibition game.

I asked my brother, my son and a good friend who are all big baseball fans and none of them knew until today. What a strange way for a sport to open its season.

They opened 2014 in Australia

They are opening the next 2 years in Japan

The normal opening day crap that everyone likes to pay to see will still happen. Nothing at all has changed. But this was all announced over a year ago. So it's been out there for everyone

They are trying to expand globally, working on getting into markets that fill rosters. The islands are next. Asia and Mexico are this year

Reading these replies, a whole lot of baseball fans were thinking WTF.

My only complaint is 230AM for their market to watch. If they play this at 9am in Tokyo, it's a normal night game for the west coast

That needs to be worked out. Outside of that, I don't care one bit where the season starts. Let others enjoy a chance to catch a game. It's not going to hurt to lose 1 series to another country

I know they do this stuff, as does football, but it seems you are the only one it was "widely known" to. o_O

I view it sorta like the First Four or whatever that crap is last night and tonight in the NCAA tourney. They call it part of the tournament, but everyone just sort of ignores it and knows the real actual tournament tips Thursday morning. Same with MLB. Sure the season opened, but opening day isn’t until March 28.
