Saw on the news the other night about a few WC players signing for various colleges. Just curious, what (if any) is generally considered a "better" offer - the high level D2s (Pitt State, NW Missouri) or lower level D1 (MO State)? General logic says any D1 takes a better athlete than any D2 but on the other hand - NWMO maybe a more attractive offer with the reasonable chance to play in a national championship vs playing in a struggling program in a subset of D1 football that no one really follows, even though I would argue MSU in general is a superior option college wise - just maybe not in football?

Well, first would be if you could afford college. D1 is a full ride, D2 is a partial. If my parents don't have squat then D1.

Hmmm. Play on a team that loses 49-35 to W Illinois, 59-7 to SD State, 48-7 to ND State and 37-0 to N. Iowa... with a home crowd that looks like they have sniffed chloroform OR play on a team that has won Six D2 National Championships and 29 Conference Titles, no losing seasons since 1994, and has a rabid crazed home field fan base?

Oh, NW is a good atmosphere, but there was a time when it was like msu, in the 80s you could bring in your own drinks, usually spiked. Heck, coolers were okay. Too me it depends on what you can afford but most people don't think that way. The reason I went to NW was it was cheaper than Iowa schools and not close to home

swMissouri State in the 1980s and early 1990s as a party school, rivals anything, anywhere, all time. The Wadd Brothers House (What other school had an illegal night club basically on campus, with unlimited kegs and gorgeous weed salesladies at the door), the Naked Mile Relay. (be there and be Bare.)...unrivaled...the other schools in the region don't even come close to what went on down there.

Sometimes we get a little too caught up in the difference between D1 and D2...of course in football it is a big difference, in other sports not so much.

If Pitt St. were in the Big 12. They would have five of the top 10 Javelin throwers.
Big 12
Javelin:
1. Fab Dohmann, Texas 238-0
2. Creighton Sanders, Pittsburg St. 221-1
3. Werner Bouwer, Texas Tech 220-8
4. Derek Selk, K-State 220-4
5. Josh Hudiburg, Pittsburg St. 217-11
6. Logan Wolfey, K-State 212-8
7. John Blazevic, Pittsburg St. 210-8
8. Steele Walsik , Texas 207-4
9. Brett Thompson, Pittsuburg St. 204-9
10. Tyson Roderique, Pittsburg St. 203-11

100 Meter Dash. Big 12 (D1) and MIAA(D2) Mixed. MIAA domintes the BIG 12 a little... hahaaha Point: Just because somone competes in D2, doesn't necessarily mean they couldn't have competed in D1.

1 Divine Oduduru SO Texas Tech 10.11
2. Naron Rollin, Pittsburg State. 10.14
3. Roberto Smith, Lincoln U. 10.16
4. Stephen Ross Lincoln U. 10.28

5 Terrell Smith SR K-State 10.32
6 Andrew Hudson JR Texas Tech 10.33
7 Jullane Walker SO K-State 10.34
8. Akeemo Minott, Central Missouri 10.36

No, the difference is money. When I come out of college after 5 years how much money am I going to owe. There are division 1 guys at all levels. Yes we know Springfield was the party capital. There was an apartment that was for escapades between faculty and students.

One of the best distance runners in the nation transfered from Mo Southern to Alabama. Vincent Kiprop.

Let you in on a secret...

Most these top D2 programs have a majority of kids paying zero tuition. Through FASFA (or however it spelled), grants, and other non-athletic scholarships. What they can't get covered that way they use the athletic scholarships to cover the difference.

I agree with Bobby there ... to my middle-aged mind it would be all about cost. To most of these players 'now-a-days' and their parents? I'm betting it's gonna go to wherever they can most envision Junior to be in the spotlight!

To me FCS (ie. Missouri State) isn't D1. When an FCS school beats and division 1 team (other than kansas) it's big news. The playing field is a bit more level in bball, but football has around 75 big boys in FBS. Others need not apply.

Unless you are a high level DI player, I think you need to look at the education you are going to get. You are not going to be a pro athlete, where can you get the better education to do what you want and get a good deal of it paid for while you continue to play the game. If that is high level DII instead of lower level DI than so be it.

Not sure if the Bears are really a football school? If I was going to take my boys to a college football game right now, with the product that MSU puts on the field I would probable chose to take them to a MSSU game, that is a fans perspective.
The product on the field has not been good at MSSU either. However, I believe there will be improvement at MSSU under Coach Sims.

Hit the nail on the head. I would also add where can you come out at the end owing the least amount of money in student loans.

Just to clarify I am not asking about FCS vs FBS or other sports like track and swimming. I'm specifically talking about football between a higher level D2 like PSU or NW Missouri compared to a low/mid level FCS D1 team like MO State. When I was reading the announcement about the players from Webb City I was just wondering what was generally considered better? Which generally takes a better athlete? I really don't know. Maybe the answer is more convoluted than I thought.

Pitt State and NW would prob beat MSU at MSU.

Pitt State did beat MSU at MSU.... I was at the game one of the rare few MSU games I have wanted to see. I remember MSU would not hire Pitt States coach because they wanted an exciting air attack so went with Del Miller after getting rid of Jesse Branch and what they considered his boring option offense. So about 20 of us loaded up to go watch that game, We wanted to watch the Boring Pitt State option offense beat the crap out of the high flying Bears attack..yeah I remember they were calling it the Air raid offense. LOL.

Love it. Do you remember what year this was?

I remember the Air Raid Offense and it was, well, "offensive" all right. I predicted they would regret running Jesse off but Jesse wasn't an arse kisser and that is what the powers that be expected and demanded at that time.

It was Del Millers first year....thinking 95 right after Jesse Branch left. I remember that spring on TV all over SWmo they were running ads about how Del Miller's Bears were going to take flight in a new exciting brand of football was coming to SWmo, they dubbed it the air Raid offense. It was big news around here because before they hired Del I remember Pitt States coach had applied also, many of us thought he would be a shoe in and the Bears would be on the fast track to winning. But they decided to go with Del because he was going to bring in the same offense they ran at Kansas State. Pitts states coach told them he was going to do what he did to win and would not change, SWmo did not like that.

When the Schedule came out that Pitt State would be the home opening opponent for the bears that year we all wanted to purchase tickets just so we could watch Pitt State beat the Bears and show the SWmo administration what they could have had. At the time and it still may be it was the largest crowd for Plaster field It was like standing room only. SWmo thought they were all coming to see the bears new offense, but when you talked to those in the crowd most had come to watch Pitt State beat them and most were upset they had not hired the Pitt State coach. It was a very good game, I think the final score was 7-3 or 10-7 something like that, but it was anything but boring. The one thing I remember about SWmo is they had a QB named Jeremy Hogg who got his ankle rolled up on early and gutted it out the rest of the game, he was the one bright spot for the Bears.

I just remember that the Pitt State coach in an interview after he did not get the job said that he felt they wanted him to change what he did and he said that what he did was his key to success, (something like that). I often wonder what he could have done with Jesse's recruits, those kids were recruited to run his type of offense not what Del wanted to run. Had they at that time gone in a different direction maybe MSU would be a totally different program now Jesse had a good base already in place.

I felt sorry for Del he was given only 3 years, so he never really got a chance to field a team with the type of kids he wanted to recruit for his type of offense, all those kids, Jesse recruited were run option guys mainly.

Overall, of course FCS is stronger. However, the top tier D2 teams are just as good as most of the FCS teams. One year, Cal Poly, at DII level, defeated Boise State the year Boise won the D-IAA (FCS) Title. Of course, Cal Poly won the DII Title that year as well.

I don't think MSU would want to play NW MIssouri or Pitt every year...they would lose more than they win.

Miller had some quality Leatherneck teams at W.I. but I never felt like he exhibited much energy at SMS. Maybe it was just distorted perception on my part but it seemed he lacked real dedication to the task.

I was at that Boise state game with cal poly. 1994 at bus. Pokey Allen was the coach it was his 2nd year after taking over for a guy like Del miller. Al Borges was the offensive coordinator. Pokey was a character, at a coaches clinic talked about when he was at Portland State and the crazy stuff he did.
