Webster Groves Coach Resigns

Its a pretty shtty sitch. Got 3 covid games, 3 regular season games before his O-line coach quit, who also happens to be the principal. Then using principal directives moved his coaching staff around and basically made it impossible for him to do his job, thus almost forcing him to resign. The assistant AD is now the head coach (interm) but will be the head coach next year, that i am sure of, and I bet Irvin (the principal), is back on the staff next year.

Keep in mind Buha left MICDS where he had a 70+% win percentage and took them to the state finals in 2018. He started a new parent booster club, and got the junior program back up and running with 23 kids in it. Pretty good for the hand he was dealt.

Also, the coaching staff and some parents raised some money to redo the locker rooms, which were literally the worst in the state, and that is being nice.

The admin should really look into how this all went down.

If you were a coach, would you want that kind of bs from your principal.

Also, 5 other coaches resigned as well, not just Buha.

If this is all true, admin is well aware and prob not going to change things. Don't know him, but any private school coach who goes to a public is going from coaching kids from many diff zip codes, some of whom have been recruited to come there, to coaching only the kids in your boundary pool (not sure how many VTS students WG has anymore). WG talent level is nowhere near what it was 10 years ago. One of the only class 5 schools that plays on a grass field. Frankly, they are now doing what Jefferson, St. Charles, St François, etc have to deal with in you coach the kids that show up and deal with the ebb and flow of talent. Also known as reality.

STL metro area public schools are a complete crap show because of the private school situations. It's literally the wild west there now with privates. They're not even bashful about the recruiting these days, what with billboards and all. Build your youth program, then get them plucked by the privates. I'm all for choice and whatnot, just not sure why anyone would want to coach at a public in the metro and fight that battle. You and your staff work hard to develop youth and then they leave when they get to HS. That's a hard pill to swallow.

Of the 16 MO schools ranked in the P-D large and small school rankings...7 are private. Publics just need to get better, huh?

1. East St. Louis (7-2)
2. CBC (8-1)
3. De Smet (7-2)
4. Holt (9-0)
5. Francis Howell (8-1)
6. Summit (9-0)
7. Marquette (8-1)
8. Ladue (8-1)
9. Lindbergh (8-1)
10. O'Fallon (6-3)

1. St. Mary's (7-1)
2. MICDS (9-0)
3. Mater Dei (9-0)
4. Lutheran St. Charles (7-2)
5. Lutheran North (6-3)
6. Union (9-0)
7. Duchesne (7-2)
8. Vashon (7-1)
9. Hillsboro (8-1)
10. Breese Central (8-1)

They have gotten very bold about it, and nothing is being done about it. All people can really do is refuse to play them until they have to in the playoffs.

The county schools did some of that type of stuff to an extent when the VTS program had a much higher population. I know they were held to zones of some sort, but the county public schools then did a lot of jockeying and maneuvering to get certain kids. LIke I said, now they know how the schools in St. Charles, Jefferson, Franklin, etc. counties have had to do it forever. Coach the kids in your area and deal with the ebb and flow of the talent level.

It's not even the ebb and flow of talent. It's the purging of talent. I think most coaches at public schools can accept the ebb and flow aspect.

So how were the public schools in those places doing prior to the blatant recruiting? What year did it start? 1968?

I get that. My point was the schools like WG, Parkway C, Mehlville, etc benefited from VTS students for years. Now that program is really small in numbers, and some district are totally out of it. Add that with kids being grabbed by the privates, and yes many of those schools are a shell of what they used to be.

Looking at the non-private schools that are ranked not many from St Louis. Most are from schools that have a strong football tradition like Francis Howell & East St Louis. Some of the others are farther away from the private schools that recruit football talent.

I think you nailed it. They've made the decision to commute (or work in St Charles Co.) to the city and go to a fine public school...rather than live closer to the city, not commute, but pay for private tuition. Heck, I get it all. If I worked downtown (or even Clayton)...I wouldn't want to pay Clayton real estate prices, I wouldn't want to commute from St Chuck, I wouldn't want my kids at most districts inside the 270 loop, and I wouldn't want to pay tuition. So it sort of becomes a lesser of the evils decision.

Oh, truth. Totally understand. Look no further than the Parkways. They've fallen on some rough times athletically w/o the insurgence of de-seg talent.
