The Festus National Guard unit was activated back in 1968 and send to Fort Benning Ga. Back then they did not deploy the entire unit but used about 75% of the guys as replacements. Evidently a Reserve or National Guard unit from a small town was almost entirely wiped out in WWII. Now they're back to deploying the entire unit.Yep, I don't get it either. It deeply saddens me whenever I read about a Nat Guard killed somewhere like Afghan, and learn they are some 40 yr old dad with a wife and kids at home. The Nat Guard should not be deployed out of the US, unless maybe temporarily for natural disasters for our neighbors.
I get it during a war but as far as I know we ain't at war right now.The Festus National Guard unit was activated back in 1968 and send to Fort Benning Ga. Back then they did not deploy the entire unit but used about 75% of the guys as replacements. Evidently a Reserve or National Guard unit from a small town was almost entirely wiped out in WWII. Married or married with kids were all used as replacements, even some with bone spurs. I believe the Festus Unit was activated once before Vitetnam and several times since.
