Wasn't Biden and the Dems against Tariffs? Notice that NBC, CBS or ABC has reported on this?

Home of the Cubs!!
I find this interesting as wood prices soar that Biden and the Dems do this and this really should be a big story with current lumber prices? Where is the outrage like when when Trump raised Tariffs on China and goods because of the cost increase.

The first paragraph says that it won't raise prices for consumers. Are they only talking about Canadian consumers I guess?
If it doesn't affect US consumers then it shouldn't matter.
If it does affect US consumers then I am not in favor of it.

See I guess you didn't read it all...I am not sure who is saying it will not affect the US consumer? But later it says it will?

Most builders are saying that thier suppliers say that this is already driving up prices.

Lumber prices are skyrocketing for various reasons beyond just high demand from homebuilders and remodelers. Lumber tariffs had prices already rising a year ago, but then when the pandemic hit, production shut down. The expectation was that housing demand would dry up for a long time. But instead, after a brief pause, it came roaring back. Homebuilders were caught off guard, as were lumber producers.

Clearly, increasing the cost of imports via tariffs does not help the situation,” said Robert Dietz, chief economist for the National Association of Home Builders. “We need to do everything that we can to increase domestic supply, including producing more domestic lumber, as well as resolving the trade dispute. It is matter of housing affordability.”

NO I read it all. That is why I asked if they were only talking about the Canadian customers in that first sentence. Because I saw where it was supposed to hurt the American consumer.
That was why I asked because I wasn't sure I understood after reading it.

ah okay... Yes I can agree with that...I don't know that it makes it clear...but it is a Canadian newspaper not sure what to make of it...LOL

What I don't understand is why this has been ongoing since 1982? The unforgotten lumber war.
I like to do research on things like this when I find them... There has been some interesting reads on this. And one thing for sure we the consumer pay are paying for this lumber war of sorts only making the big lumber and private owners of certain forrest richer here in the US.

Dang it bullit you don't have to prove you are smarter than me all the time. :)
That WAPO article is deep and sometimes hard to follow.
That gave me way more questions than answers.
Why are we working with provinces individually and not the country as a whole?
Why does NAFTA not cover this in a way that makes it no tariffs on anything, instead of
Why doesn't the UMSCA make trade such that there are no tariffs (granted this was written before UMSCA, it just made me question that)?

Is the headline suppose to be hasn't reported? Not being a Grammar Nazi just making sure that was the point.

Yes me too!! That is why I went out and started doing research.
You have to wonder how much is this lumber cost the consumer over the years? Again this has been ongoing since 1982!!
I couldn't find a lot about our side of the argument like how many jobs we would lose if we just opened our markets? That is the one thing I would really like to see,
I think the biggest thing I see is it the loss of company profits?
What I also don't get is the Dems are "supposedly" big environmentalist...Wouldn't using more Canada lumber save our own forest? Again if the job lose is not huge?

Dem's big on the environment....just window dressing. They hate nuclear. Big on the Scam of Carbon Credits....love Wind/Solar which is suspect at best and 100% unreliable.

If Dems gave a real Crap about it they would give all the subsidies to Nuclear and make it safer.

My good friend owns one of the largest timber export businesses in the US. China is buying timber faster than he can cut and ship it. Business is booming and has been for many years. Trump's trade war slowed it for a year but now his crews are working 6-7 days a week. He ships all over the world and China is his best customer.

Why are we buying timber from Canada? Do we not have enough timber in the US? My friend tells me he sees a big problem coming as there are few young people in the business, All of his associates are over 50 yrs old, and no young people are taking over businesses. It's hard work and long hours. Young people don't want to work that hard. He has 2 sons he is educating. He is a multi millionaire.

Yeah that is what happened to wood pellets for stoves a few years ago. A couple of years ago I couldn't find any for my stove lucky it wasn't my only source of heat. A friend of mine works for a factory and when I asked him why they couldn't keep up, he said it's not that we can't keep up, it is the fact that China will pay more for it, He said they were working almost none stop and shipping everything over seas.

I had always heard alot of our timber goes overseas, but my question is...If Canada's timber is idling factories and laying off people because we won't purchase why are they not then trying to sell to China? Things just don't add up, well at least not to me?

I just wish they would figure it out, so I could buy some fair priced 2x6's and 2x4's. It's insane how much it cost now.

I've looked into getting one of these......if I thought it would pay for itself and if I had the ability to operate it in a competent manner. I just might. We have land with Timber.
