In the spirit of keeping the volleyball board 1 step ahead of cross country and track ....

Attended the 1a and 2a finals this past Saturday in Cape.

1A ... SV came storming out and took the first set from a very error prone Winona team. First time I got to see Winona play and was very unimpressed the first set. Winona came back in set 2 to dominate SV who could not stem the tide which carried over into set 3 where they found themselves down something like 13-2 before storming back to within 2 points. The main hitter for Winona reminded me of a vintage Bismarck team that revolved around a big girl ... they set her all over the floor and she carried the load. Luckily for Winona she seems to be in pretty good shape and Winona was able to close out the match for their 3rd straight title. Where is Holthaus playing in college, and can anyone tell me which club team she played with?

2A ... Fatima makinbg something like their 3rd Final 4 appearance in 4 years dropped their opening set against Liberty Mountain View before rebounding to force a 3rd set. Liberty bounced back to take the 3rd. Liberty has a very young team and should be back next year. Fatima seems to have had the same coach the last several years out of Hazelwood in STL. Is Fatima a traditional power this coach took over or has he built this program up? Where is Fatima?

3A - never saw any of this action, but the top 2 teams must have been loaded. Watched St. Pius Festus dominate a district which had some nice teams in it, and they never got a sniff of the final 2.

4A - never saw any of this action but Lafayette completes a 4 peat, defeating St. Joseph's STL. For a public to go 4 years in a row in the biggest class of volleyball ... there has to be a story there. I thought they lost a ton of players but they reloaded.
Final 4 location - will it be back in Cape? Love it there since its only an hour from my house.

Saw Villa Duchesne and Helias play in the same pool at the Oakville Gateway Tournament in September. Helias was the real deal and Villa was solid. Pius(Festus) was really good. Played tight regular season with St. Joe and Lafayette matches but Helias was much better.

Lafayette got better as the year went on. They were on the ropes in their district semi down to Eureka 12-6 in the third set. Also faced elimination against Cor Jesu in the quarterfinal facing a match point in the third set.

I believe that this was the first year of a new contract at Cape. Should be there for a while.

Rachel has signed with Eastern Illinois. Word is she broke 5 different records in the final 4 for the year, and a career. Winona did have inconsistent play throughout the tournament and the year, but in that they were very very young. 3 sophomores and 2 Freshman in the rotation makes for some inconsistency. Winning their third straight championship and 5th overall since 2001 was a great accomplishment for such a young team. I believe it was their 9th Championship game since 2001 as well.

Seen 2,3, and 4 championships. All good matches Any team that can go undefeated as Helias did is an amazing accomplishment. Congrats to all the teams that participated and I also hope it stays in Cape.

Helias is loaded for awhile. They did not lose at all on the JV level and Frosh only lost one match all season. Their coach is really good at putting people in the places they can succeed.

Fatima had never been to a Final Four before Mark Bockstruck took over 4-5 years ago. The foundation was laid by the previous coach Gina Massman Heckman and then Mark was able to go to the next level. Fatima is in Westphalia about 20 minutes southeast of Jefferson City on Highway 63.
